I Need Advice From The Audio Gurus

So after installing my new MTX subs, I'm thinking about getting a new amp to run them. The problem is, I SUCK AT A/V STUFF! I can install it, but I have no idea what pieces to put together to install! I currently have an MTX 4 channel amp, I don't remember what watt it is. The new subs I installed are MTX Thunder 5500. The paper says the recommended power rating is 100-200 watts RMS. They have dual 4 ohm voice coils.

I think I'm wanting to get a 2 channel amp that would run the subs between the 100-200 watts that is recommended. HELP ME PICK OUT AN AMP! I'm sure I can't afford something as good as JL, but maybe something along the lines of another MTX or a Rockford Fosgate. Thanks!

For a dual 4 ohm sub i suggest getting a mono channel amp. They are purpose built for subs so you usually get more wattage for your money. 100-200 is fairly entry level for that type of amp. You should be able to get kicker, Rockford, alpine, and several others at pretty good prices. Do you have a specific budget?

Budget would be $200 or less.

bah, I just re-read you post and noticed you had 2 subs. I thought it was just one. You were on the right track with the 2 channel. You could wire the subs to present a 2 ohm load to each channel ot a 4 ohm load to the bridged. Should net the same power from most amps just depends on which you would rather cable up. I dont like subs wired in stereo personally.

I ahd already pasted all of these so maybe use them as reference for 2 channel amps. until I can look at 2 channel suggestions. all these are amps that I would feel comfortable spending my own money on...

that would work. I have an mtx 6500d that is probably 7 years old, still works fine.

You went with an infinite baffle setup, right? The amount of power that you are going to need is going to be less than if the speaker was in a box. The amp you selected is a perfect match if the subs were in a box but i think it would work. Wire the coils in a series/parallel configuration to achieve four ohms. Start with the gains down all the way when tuning and make sure to turn on the sub-sonic filter on the amp.

Question - so the amp says it'll push 650 x1 @ 1 ohm. If I use 2 subs does that mean they'll both get 325?

The subs will handle WAY less power in an IB configuration. You don't need a powerful amp to drive free air subs.

I like these. Bridge it and put a 4ohm load on it.
