Hey,
My used Max didnt come with the stock head unit. It came with a kennwood CD player/ radio. So i have one slot free for somthing else, and i figured an Equalizer would be a good bet. I want to spend 30-100's on ebay for one. I am wondering what i can get in that range, or what to look for when choosing an Equalizer and what to look OUT for.
Also will i be able to easily install this?

Thanks!

Well, you should always look out when on ebay; I also don't know that you'll find much of a selection of in-dash equalizers on there. Kenwood does make one that'll fill the empty slot you've got, but it's $300 retail. Once you get the dash apart, it just screws in where the pocket is, but getting to that point is somewhat involved. Somebody posted instructions on doing it not long ago.

The only DIN-size Kenwood signal processor lists for $350. The KGC-6042A is less expensive and will do a good job. It is a half-DIN unit, so you'll need a trim panel to mount it.

You don't have to take out the whole dash, just the center portion. I think this is the link with the instructions:
http://www.geocities.com/artourb/max...hoto_album.htm

The single-DIN Kenwood one is the KGC-9044, looks like mmxpress has that and the other one mentioned, too:

Ok, im back to this

Ok the rest of system is up, so now im back to this question. Is the KGC-9044 the only equalizer that i can just stick in that slot with any modifications to my dash?
ANd to isntall it, i take out the center piece, and then wht? hook some stuff up to my head unit, and thats it? Or do i have to wire stuff to the battery, or what?
Thanks

No you don't exclusively have to hook up a Kenwood eq to it. Pretty much any eq could work. The matched system looks a bit better usually. I have a DIN size eq I'll be selling, it's the Sony xe-744 I dunno if you are interested in my price though. I'll be selling it at least for $200.00.

Oh.. one question.. How are your speakers hooked up? through the head unit, or through separate amps? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can only use an eq if you have amps running the speakers. Unless you get an amp/eq ( I got one of those too )

Hope that helps.

200 is a bit more than im wanting to pay.
I dont have the stock speakers, and i do have a seperate amp in the trunk.
Do i have to hook the EQ up to the amp? So I just want a Din sized EQ, right? What does one look for in an Eq?
I was hopping all i had to do was hook somthing up to my head unit to get the EQ to work. I dont need it to do anything too complicated. But i alrady have holes drilled to run RCAS from my trunk to my HU, so maybe that wont be as hard...

Your HU doesn't have an effects loop, so you have to run RCAs from the HU to the EQ. Then run RCAs from the EQ to the amp.

?

how do u know it doesnt have an effects loop?
I should look up the info on my HU... but your guessing that its probably a crappy HU, and that feature is only on better one? Yeah, im guessing its a crappy HU..

I didn't say anything about crappy. Just that it doesn't have an effects loop (not many HUs do). So the signal flow has to be HU-->EQ-->amp.

I just installed a half-DIN EQ in my 95 yeaterday. . . It isn't that hard if you know what you are doing. I will need to create a trim panel for it though when I get back to school as I can't find any hobby shops around where I live. . . I has made a good difference with my MB Quarts though. . . So many things sound much better.

what kind was the EQ? ANd how much?
Why do u have to make a trim? Just so it is flush with the dash? Id like to do that to. I dont like how it sticks out. how much would that cost?

It is an 11-Band Alpine EQ. I bought it off of Synki for a reasonable price. I have to make trim for it because there isn't a dash kit for a half-DIN unit for the Maxima, so one needs to be created. It shouldn't be too expensive though, I just need to find a hobby store.

you can get EQ's that have speaker outs AND amp outs. that way you can tune them from the same EQ. or, if you're really ambitious, you can get two half din sized eq's use one to tune the subs and one for speakers. you won't even need a dash kit. questions? let me know.

Speaker outs? The only way that that would work is if the EQ has an amp in it. Those old-fashioned EQ/boosters are crappy. Not worth it.
