Hardwired Micro USB

Hardwired Micro USB
Most folks I've seen around town run their SmartPhones, Mobile GPS, etc windshield mounts dead center on the windshield. I spend a lot of time in my car and being left handed it was more convenient to mount the windshield dock for my droid on the left adjacent to the A-pillar. This creates a charging situation, where on long hauls GPS kills my device. I didn't want to drag the pig tail stock charger over the steering column; so I am going with a hardwired Micro USB wire. I did a quick search that came back null. I am curious if anyone else has hardwired in their phone chargers.....

It's not too hard to do. I actually added a USB port to my dashboard.
First you need a Panel Mount USB Socket...
Then you need something to convert the 12V in your car to the 5V that USB requires. I bought something like this and disassembled it...
Then you put the disassembled adapter in a project box. Wire up the 12V to one end and your panel mount cable to the 5V coming out. Here is the pin out for USB. Ignore the D- and D+. You only need the power part for charging...
Then find a place to hide your project box behind the dash and mount your USB socket where it's convenient for you.
