personally I love my Panasonic CQ-DFX-701U, It has all the right features for me, three pre-outs, although I only use the sub and the front outs. I think that the only major difference between the 801 and the 701 is the output power, mine is 50 and that is 60. I have never had any problems with panasonic either, now Sony is another thing, but I have also had a CQ-DFX55 and never had a problem, it was grest as well. But most important choose the HU that will work best for you and will work for as long as you plan on owning it.

Do the pioneer screen savers change with the music or are they just "pretty pictures" to watch? On the panasonic the different screen savers are all types of spectrum analyzers which incoporate the pretty pictures, but there is also a regular SA on the panasonic, I believe it shows 11 bands.

got it at a local car audio shop, but is also available online at many different places, such as http://www.sounddomain.com and http://www.crutchfield.com. I think I have a picture of the HU on my website.

Out of the 2, I would go with the Panasonic. My first choice would be Eclipse

I bought a Panasonic CQ-DFX-701U a few months ago. I bought that one after having a Pioneer deh-p7200. The Panasonic receiever looks cool in pictures, but I was extreamly dissapointed at how pixely the screensavers look. Having a silver color cd player is also cool, but it is just some crappy silver paint. The paint on the frequently used buttons started to wear off within a month!!! I was also NOT impressed with the EQ settings. It only would allow you to change the bass and the treble levels; mids can make or break a stereo. Now that I've had the Panasonic for a while, I miss the Pioneer. The pioneer was just 45x4 instead of the 701u's 50x4 or the 801u's 60x4, but I believe the pioneer was overall a MUCH better cd player; I'm not positive, but I think the Pioneer might have had a higher rms than the panasonic. The pioneer had plenty of power, decent display, nice menu setup, and awesome EQ controls. The only thing that the Panasonic player has over the Pioneers (at least the pioneer model that I owned) was the panasonic player has 5v sub outs and the Pioneer has 4v. I personally believe that Pioneer makes a much better cd player. Panasonic has a good reputation, but I would steer clear of the cd player. Panasonic should stick to tv's and keep their noses out of the car audio biz. Email me if you have any ?'s.

I don't know what you got stuck with, but I have had mine for about 6 months and had absolutly no problems with it, including the paint, it still looks the way it always has, except for the normal facplate scratches. I don't use the remote either.
