Bass to deep?
Bass to deep?
Ok here's the scenario:
In my car I have 2 12's (Houston Acoustic) in a bandpass box...with a 600 Watt Kenwood amp and 1/2 farad cap....Now the bass that comes out of this is soo deep that it actually hurts my ears...the funny part is that it hurts my b/f's ears to (and that's really hard to do as he listens to the radio MUCH louder than I do).
Now in my b/f's truck he has 2 Pioneer 12's in ported boxes with 850 Watts of Kenwood power and 1 Farad cap....I can turn his radio up much louder than mine and it sounds very good but the bass doens't hurt my ears, but it's just as deep....
What would make the difference here? Is it just the type of boxes that we have?
Do you guys prefer Bandpass or Ported boxes or your own custom made ones?

My main point, is the difference in the Bass due to the type of speakers/boxes I have?

But really...do you mean it's to deep, or to loud...cuz deep...well i don't know what to say really. Usally the diff between 2 cars with the same setup would be the vehicle/box. But I don't really think that is the case here. really I don't think either of those would be truly louder or deeper than the other. But of course alot of things vary so maybe.
Listen to some different music! lol

Never go with a pre-made, bandpass, plexiglass front, with a port made out of cardboard. Always go with a custom made box (I prefer sealed down fire)that is made for that specific sub. Your bass quality will be much improved. Your amp and cap is fine. You just need a custom built box (sealed)

Actually I listen to all different kinds of music...I guess you guys would just have to hear my system to understand what I'm talking about. It sounds good don't get me wrong...maybe my ears are just to sensitive....
Thanks for the comments guys.

I know what you are talking about. The fact is that you have a bandpass box in an enclosed trunk, therefore producing the effect of having 3 boxes for the same sub.(2 for the bandpass, 1 for the trunk) The air will resonate more in this setup causing the overbass thank your talking about. The only way to get rid of it would be to install a sealed box or just turn the gain way down on your amp to equalize the sound. Your boyfriends truck isnt as loud because of his box and its in an exposed setting ( like a van, extended cab truck, SUV, etc.)If possible you may be able to cancel some of it by turning the subs to face the back seat instead of the trunk. Good luck, Charles

I can't remember the frequency of the node in the maxima. But I think you may have your crossover set at or above the frequency of the node. That's the resonant frequncy of the car, basically. So at that point you get a large response peak. Also, your bandpass box may be tuned at or near that point. Bandpass boxes didn't get the reputation for one note bass for no reason. Properly tuned they can sound great. But tuned wrong I think this is a common problem.
I would try changing the crossover frequency. If you have an EQ you can also try changing the level at roughly 60Hz. Another human hearing phenomena is that distorted sound, sounds louder than undistorted sound. A harsh timber, as opposed to clean sound. With most of my CD's I can turn my HU all the way up and it sounds great. I won't notice my ears ringing until 15-45 minutes later. But a few CD's, that are mastered at a higher level will cause the amps to put out more power than the speakers can cleanly reproduce(or the amps to clip, my ears don't know the difference between teh two), and they will sound loud before I get to the max setting.

you miss have sucessfully found a near perfect match of subs to your car
its all about effeciency... at different frequencies the speaker has a different effiency same for the box... the trunk.. the car it self even....
if you go buy bass mechanic ver 5.0 i belive... it has a resonate freqency test.. you can find out which notes are hurting your ears.. and cross over them... also a nice head unit or good eq may alleviate your problems...
also... you can try a few simple steps... take out yoru sub.. and put something in there.. like screw a 2 by 4 .. that will decrease the airspace in the box... and raise the resonate frequcny (vs adding fiber fill will "increase" the airspace and lower the resonate frequncy of the box)
or if your like me and some others... keep the subs.. put em in a "small" sealed box i prefer the sound my self.. and they are often easier to predict
and... i agree with Y2KMaxGXE-r you need to pick up one the maxima.org er's :P

Don't worry Sarah. I think their requests are made in jest. I think it's the male ego, it's much more open and aggressive when there is a great distance between the female they are talking with. Also the fact that 99.5% of the org members are male. So when I female speaks up all the emotions run pretty high. It will settle back down if you stick around, and don't change your story - "Plus I'm very happy in my relationship...will probably be married by the end of the year."
