Adding subs and sub amp to stock system (no Bose)

Asking for my kid...
He's inherited our '01 Maxima and wants to add subs and an amp to drive them to the stock sound system. It's not a Bose system, but all he's been able to find are instructions for working with a Bose system.

Can someone point me to a good DIY on grafting these items onto the system?

Any heads-up on any gotchas or problems he might run into would be great help, too. Like, is the stock electrical system going to stand up to this?

Stock electrical should be fine if he's not going to be pushing a ton of power. As for getting a signal, just tap into the speaker outputs. An amp with a signal sensing turn on circuit would be nice. I'm not sure if the non Bose setup has an outboard amp or not. Having one would be helpful so that you can tap into it for the remote turn on signal. If not you could tap into a constant 12v source & if you want put a switch on it.

There is some information here that may be of some help.

In order to just not start another thread I'll just kinda add onto this one. My friend has a pair of kicker door speakers, can I just replace my non-bose speakers with then. The box says they're rated at 4 ohms I think.

Yes, you should be able to replace them if it is not the bose system.
