what year car? what power of amps are you running?

I'm running 2300W RMS on the stock alternator and dont' have any problems.

FYI, no matter what alternator you're running, you'll get a bit of lights dimming when you run tons of power. it takes more than a millisecond for the alternator to respond to the demand in current and dump more power out.

That's exactly correct, the alternator needs a little help when responding to music(which is not linear). Also, remember that it's not always the alternator who is the culprit; Make sure you are using quality wire and interconnects to make sure that the electronics are not struggling to work the way you are demanding they do (i.e. large enough ga. wire, good quality connections, good grounds, etc.). Otherwise it's like trying to drink a thick milk shake thru a coffee stirer, it doesn't work too good.

Exactly. Both of the above are great responses to this thread. Light dimming is caused by improper wiring and insufficient or improperly wired capacitors. Also capacitors, I have read have a halflife of about 2 years.

your battery grounds also need to be upgraded to handle the ground the amplifiers/cap needs...id reccomend 2 or 0 ga ground from the battery to the motor/frame...that helps too
