\How many cubic feet? Ported or sealed or vented?
I'm guessing ported. That's the trade-off. You either get alot of boom with ports or you get alot of kick with sealed. one or the other.

I have the vented box the biggest one built to specs... 2.25 cubic feet for one 10!... My friends box was 6.5cf for 2 twelves!!!.. I also removed my backseat witch probably gave me 1-2more db's... You would not believe how much difference the vented boxes make.. Another kid I know hit just over 140db's with a kicker 12inch comp in a vented box.. He was running it off a Jensen 300watt!! the kicker comp is only 150rms!!

Re: Re: Re: Solo barics
Damn I am running vented too..and I still dont get results
...what do you have your box tuned to? Also, are you using a slot port (rectangle shaped) or circle shape?

ACtually I may either get 2 L7's in a ported enclosure (3 cubic foot total though...i want small for weight reduction), or 1 15" L7 with a 3 foot ported box...either setup run off of a jbl bp1200.1 (1200+ wrms). I really want to hit the 140+ db barrier....especially when i get a maxima or grand prix.

I was hitting 145Db with 1 12", but it was boomy as hell. I'm not into that. I like tightness. I stopped listening to DJ Magic Mike and such years ago.
No I listen to alot of Trance and 140+bpm music. I'm thinking of trying a 5th order box this summer, and see if that is a good mix of loudness and kick.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Solo barics
YOu cannot fold down the seat in a maxima either... But when you get one, get one with the center pass through.. Also removed the rear seat and take out a large bronze colored piece of metal..

That makes a lot of sense....lately my system has started to sound softer....but it is in fact really the same...just my hearing going.

i am sorry, but i have to disagree with you. i have 8 years reading, reading, reading, designing, building, etc. and what youre saying is a total misconception. properly designed and built, a ported box will sound like a sealed box, but have more lowend extension, and less distortion. its only boomy if you design it that way, and you can make a sealed one sound boomy too.

Now I have heard some boxes with ports that kick, but nothing like a well designed sealed box....the opposite for deep boomy bass is also true.
A sealed box that sounds boomy is just too much airspace, and usually sounds distorted.
A ported box that has "kick" tends to have either too little airspace, or a jagged edge/lip that the air space is hitting, and also sounds distorted compared to a great sealed box..
It's all about what you like anyway.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Solo barics
not to flame, but the cause of a boomy box is a high box Qtc. a high Qtc is caused by too small of a box, it also causes high group delay (which causes boominess). i have my adire brahma 15" in a 3.2 cubic foot box before displacement (so its a little bit below the standard .707 box Qtc), but it is really tight, and has hella low extension.

one other thing i forgot is, when you run subs as IB, why do they sound so tight, and hit so low? because there is no small box that becomes more and more unlinear as the sub moves, and because it has a very low Qtc.

Same with the few boxes I built too small, but opposite.
I do freely admit that I haven't been into the scene for several years..maybe speaker design changed, maybe it's just been too long. But I still find that hard to believe.
IanS
i can tell you that my 15 in a .707 box is VERY, VERY punchy. i can also make it rumble really bad too...its all a volume **** away. off of 250 watts, i can easily feel each individual punch, and my sub has very good transient response (which btw, is NOT linked whatsoever to moving mass as many believe). i dont want to act like im trying to put my stuff sounding the best due to my building skills, but ive never heard anything better than my brahma, and the guys at adire audio did onehelluva job designing this beast.
btw, if you have any questions about audio whatsoever...box design, common misconceptions etc. check out www.soundillusions.net i hang out there all the time, and so do a few speaker designers, along with a lot of fabricators, and diy'ers.

eric
