Sanity Check (2k2 Bose HU replacement)

I'm planning on replacing the Bose HU in my 2k2 with something that can play mp3s. I'd like it if someone else can verify my thought process here.

I was looking at a Sony CDX-MP70 and a Sony CDX-757MX (10 disc CD/MP3 changer). I have an Infinity Perfect 12.1 in a 1.2cuft box and two Cadence Ultradrive Z-800c amps from my old system as well as a 1F cap.

I was planning on leaving the 6 main Bose speakers in the car (mainly due to their odd sizes which I can't replace with what I want) which means I'll need one of these ( http://www.crutchfield.com/S-XSS5A8T...i=142CNN03&s=0 ). I was going to use one of my Z800c amps (450x1) on my Perfect 12.1 in the trunk (RCA-out from the HU to the amp).

I'll then need a PAC SWI-X so I can use the steering wheel controls with the deck.

My changer will go in my trunk and I should be all set from there with these things right? I'm not forgetting anything? Any suggestions?

One more thing... Have I committed a serious mistake in assuming that the Bose speakers are any good and worth keeping?

You might check with someone more familiar with the 2K2s to see if you even need the adaptor to get an aftermarket hu working with the stock bose speakers. I saw a few posts on here that said they didn't work the same way as they used to - that each speaker no longer has its own amp/active EQ, so I don't know what you'd need an adaptor for...all I can think of mismatch-wise would be impedance issues, but...

The same posts didn't speak very highly of the stock Bose speakers, claiming they were noticably worse quality than previous generations bose systems. Depends on what you want...I'd try them out with the Perfect and see if they're enough for your ears. You know as well as I do that the perfect is loud - it can take some decent highs to mix well with one of those.

The amps are not mounted on the speakers. It's a module in the trunk of the car mounted next to the sub. But the amps are still not in the HU like a "normal" car.

eh..the bose speakers are 1 ohm...so if your amps will drive them..But the bose speakers aren't worth keeping id rather upgrade to some high end Co-axials or some seperates even.

Did we get this right on the speaker sizes? 6 3/4 in the front and 5 1/4 in the back on the 2K2? That's what I've gone out and measured and looks about right. Ugh, can't stand the BOSE but dont have the skills or money for a new system now.

The bose speakers are 1ohm in the 2K2s?? Ouch.

Heh...yea, I'd probably replace them if it was me. The stock bose system in my 95 was decent enough for my liking, but I've heard the 2K2s are noticably worse sounding than the 4th gen bose systems.

Good excuse to get a nice component set

Yes, you got it right, but there are very few drop in replacements for the Bose speakers (according to Crutchfield). Apparently a lot of 6.75" and 5.25" speakers do not fit. Only a few of each are listed as "EZ fit". The non-Bose system is even worse as there are 0 "EZ fit" speakers for it.

I want to put Infinity Kappa components in it, but they won't fit and I'd rather not tear up the interior to rig them in.

That is why I was planning on keeping the Bose components and the Bose amp.

I'm aware of this, but as I mentioned I'm keeping the Bose amp, so they'll match up with it correctly.

There are very few aftermarket speakers that will fit properly in the factory mounting holes, so I'm kinda out of luck. I don't really care for any of the options I have.

I was just at Frys today and saw Infitity Reference 5 1/4 sets and 6 1/2 sets. Does anyone this those would work if I just swapped them out? That HAS to make a difference in sound, the stock BOSE speakers are just not that hot.

The Infinity Reference Series 505cs will fit in the rear (according to Crutchfield). However, I wouldn't use the tweeters myself. I'd only want to use a mid-bass driver in the rear (just like Bose did). All of Infinitys 6.5" speakers are listed as "Will not fit". The Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X178 seem to be the best Co-axials that will fit in the doors. The Kenwood eXcelon KFC-Xr71P are the best lookin components that will fit. The problem is these are not common speakers sizes, so they may be hard to find cheap.
