to remove the front ones you have to take off the door panels and just take the screws out its easy as pie and disconnect the harnesses
the rear speakers, remove the grille and unscrew em 4 screws in each... easy as pie

1. Take out lower portion of the rear seat(what you sit on) there are two pull tabs.
2. Take out the upper seat portion by removing the two 10mm bolts at the lower corners of the seat. Also, in the middle(where the armrest folds down) there are two more 10mm.
3. push the upper portion of the seat up to remove it.
4. Take out the rear deckboard by pulling up. It is held on by trim tabs so try to find the closest ones and pop them out, moving your way to the back.
5. You will see the speakers now. The bolts i believe are 7mm. You should know what to do from then on.

Did you have the bose? Or maybe they did things different in 99. My grill was bolted down from underneath the rear deckboard.

I took out my stock GXE system on my '97 that was VERY simple, I also stripped a Bose system out of a salvaged '96 Max I think there are screws underneath the rear deck holding in the grilles but cant u access them from the trunk? and after that just the 4 screws on each speaker.

I did the install/strip along time ago and the rear seats were out for other reasons so i cant be sure ur probably rite

oh well hehe n/m FIAWD96 probably gets the picture now

I just finished replacing my entire system in my 98 SE, you do have to remove the rear seats to get the back speakers....It's really really easy, as stated above, those directions Iron Lung gave are right !

I've had the front door panels of and see there are amps (and crossovers? on the front spkrs.(96 stock Bose system) Is that true of the rears also? if so wouldn't that require special replacement spkrs?

In the 4th gen each speaker has a small dedicated amp mounted with the it.

No, it wouldn't require special speakers - just mounting brackets. You'll have to replace your HU if you replace your speakers - as the level of the output signal coming out of the OEM HU would not be sufficient to power your aftermarket speakers.
