Re: the bose controversy

I just did a straight headunit replacement w/adaptor and kept the speakers. It works just fine - was actually an improvement on the sound. Unless you're a hardcore audiophile, you should be very happy w/a new head unit and the original Bose speakers. It's a real easy job, too - very DIY.

No problem. I ordered my stuff from Crutchfield. they had an adaptor for around $50.00. Some other store supposedly has a higher quality adaptor for $150.

the reason why you will automatically get a better sound out of a different headunit is because the wattage on (good)after market stereos is a little cleaner and truer. the average aftermarket hu says 45 x 4 which is really about 20x4 of clean watts where most factory head units are only about 25 x4 to start off with which only leave you with about 12.5 to 15 watts x 4 of clean wattage. The problem you will face later on is that the speakers will not hold up to the aftermarket hu those cheapo paper cones will deteriorate more quickly. Especially if you listen to your music loud. These speaker(bose)were not made to take the beating!!!

Factory bose speakers in 4th-gens are powered by individual amps per speaker, not the factory bose head unit.
