Amp Setup Question

Ive got a Sony XM-754HX/R 4 channel amp I just hooked up to my Pioneer Premier DEH-P430 HU driving my 4 speakers. The amp didn't come with any instructions, and I'm not to knowledgable about such things, I was wondering if anyone knew how to set the level's and stuff, without using an oscillascope? I've got it sounding pretty good right now, but it still doesn't sound quite right. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert, but I believe it goes like this:

set the volume of the head unit as high as you will ever listen to it. Then slowly turn up the gain on the amp untill you hear distortion. Back down just a bit and that should be the perfect spot. Then mess around with the frequences.

I don't know, sounds like I'd blow a speaker or something...

Nope...mb1 gave good advice. Just turn your gain(s) down on your amp (the less gain the lower the volume) first, then turn up the volume on the HU at least 3/4 up or louder. Then begin to turn the gains up just to the point of distortion and then back off a little. The volume you chose on your HU will now be the highest level you should be able to turn it to without distortion. Just make sure you use a clean, dynamic CD when you do this test.
