Peel & Seal Vs. Others...

Is it worth cutting corners to use this product for sound deadening? Has anyone used this successfully? Does it smell when heated? I live in Houston so this will be an issue. Is it easy to remove?

I have used peel & seal and have had no odor issues. This is a car I use for car pool's and no one in the car pool has noticed any odors. I would say from a layman's viewpoint it is the same product as brownbread, dynamat extreme, ramm mat version 1, etc. It is not easy to remove. If it were, you would not find it beneficial. I recommend a good pair of tin snips to cut the material. Use a good cleaning solution on the snips when they start to become "gummy".

Thanks, Jmax! I'm gonna go for it this weekend. I'll be covering the rear deck inside & outside of the trunk for starters. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Just remember no matter what dampening material you use that you need to clean off the surfaces that will be damped. I mean really clean it good. I always find a spot somewhere that I haven't cleaned well enough and absolutely nothing will stick to it. It's really kinda like witchcraft. If there is some silicone on a surface there is a whole list of adhesives that won't adhere to it. And others will have difficulty adhereing if there is residue of various cleaning agents. So I would actually clean it with alcohol or another chemical to remove grease and then wipe down with a moist sponge. After that dry it off with a hair dryer or heat gun. A heat gun will make most of the dampeners stick 100% better and will allow some to conform to all the curves with ease.

peal'n'seal is thin, it does not stick as good as something like RAAMmat or Dynomat Extreme, but it is cheap. I'd only use a few layers on floors.

The peel and seal has 40 mils of adhesive. The ramm mat and dynamat extreme have a total thickness of 45 mils. The difference between 40 mils and 45 mils is not enough to cause worry.

in case you are interested, i sell eDead (made by Elemental Designs), which is another deadener product. for 40 sq. feet of 45 mil deadener, its 55.50 + shipping. that comes out to a little over $1.25 a sq.ft. and a ton less than dynamat. if youre interesed, email me at nismo240sx@insightbb.com

if you would like to know what shipping is, go to www.fedex.com, and enter 50613 for the zip code.

What exactly is Peel and Seal? I mean I know that it can be used as dynamat and all that jazz, but what is it intended function? Is it weatherproofing for a house, or what?

I've used it, as well as RAMmatt, and your right, once its on, its on. but to be honest thats the way it should be. I've had problems in the past with Dynamat, not wanting to stick, even to a clean surface.

I agree. I used quite a bit of peel and seal today and it sticks really well. Almost too well...

Peel N Seal is good enough for me. Its not competition stuff because of the aesthetics of it all. However, you can't beat the price! I only have an Infinity Basslink in my trunk...however, with my entire trunk Peel-N-Sealed it can bump so hard my ears actually hurt.

Lowes. Not all the stores have it as I've found out. It's in the roofing section.

Where can I get it in PA?

Hey guys.....

To everyone that used the Peel & Seal, I am very interested in getting this stuff instead of killing my pocket for Dynamat. I went to the Lowe's closest to my house today in Hanover, PA. They never heard of the stuff, ugh. Has anyone found anywhere in PA or MD that has it for sale? And one more thing.....what all do you guys put in on? I'll be putting it in the trunk on the rear deck for sure, but where else do I need it? How much is the Peel & Seal, and how much do I need to buy??
Thanks guys, Later, Joel

I saw it at the local Home Depot in Allentown as Quick Roof. It's in a yellow wrapper and is $11.97 for a 6" x 16' roll. Personally I think Raamat is a better deal. If you include shipping($20)and the discount from Rick on Raamat it's $99 shipped for 62.5 sq ft which comes out to $1.58 sq ft whereas Quick Roof with sales tax is also $1.58 sq ft. Raamat is 15" wide though which is better for larger areas.

After extensive use of this and many other similar materials I would only put it where gravity will benefit the adhesion. So on the floor, top of rear deck, any horizontal surface that allow material to be applied on the top. I have basically given up on the commercial market haveing a material that can stick long term to vertical or upside down horizontal surfaces. I think it will be strictly home mixed products in my car for a while now.

Maybe I'm being a little thick here; are you saying that Raamat, Dynamat Extreme, etc. are not good for upside down locations but that Peel & Seal and the other home brew thinks are better? Just need to know because I was gonna Raamat the trunk lid this weekend and probably the roof later.

Thanks,

I am saying that none of the materials you mentioned are good upside down or vertical in the long haul. They might stick for a while, but they are going to come down tomorrow, the next day, or soemtime.

what about the roof?

What should go on the roof then?
I'm getting rattling from there also.

Personally on my own roof I would use a single layer of the thinner cascade audio vinyl material, or generic from parts express, followed up with a layer of carpet padding or some other acoustically absorbent material. That's if I had a budget to keep in mind. If there were no budget in mind I would start with a 1/4 inch or more of composites with epoxy resin. followed up with a thin layer of foam, a thin layer of lead or aluminum and another thicker layer of foam. Exact thickness would depend on clearance between roof and hoodliner.

I've used it. No problems with it whatsoever. I need to do some more! I also went and bought spray foam insulation to spray around my decklid too. Keeps the rattles out.

On saturday i plan n taking my seats and every thing out of my car and "dynamatting the whole car. If i am doing that with the peel and seal, how many layers should i add to get it to the same deadening qualities or better than dynamat extreme. I was going to go with Cascade but that stuff is too expensive and hard to come by!!

I used both the Peel and Seal and Dynamat Xtreme. I would double up on the peel n seal to give the exact equivalant (in terms of mass) to equal dynamat xtreme. Oh yeah, a place called ABC Supplies ( http://www.abccatalog.com/store/index.asp ) sells the stuff. It comes in almost every size; 3", 4", 6", 9", 36", etc) I bought the 4" cause it cost only $12.95. They are all 33.5 ft long so dependent on your with, you will need two rolls ( unless your going to get the 36" --- 3ft by 33.5ft equals 105 sq ft) The stuff has to be rolled on very good on parts where it will hang upside down. Actually, I'll be adding my second roll in a couple of minutes after I finish this post.

And one more thing, I think someone said that Dynamat Xtreme was only 5mm thicker than peel and seal, but trust me, you can see a big difference --- Xtreme has more tar that is more liquified than peel and seal.....good luck have fun were gloves so the tar doesn't get under yer nails peace out homies

Actually, it's 5 microns thicker. 45 versus 40. So 1/8 thicker. The problem that I have had with peel and seal is that it is inconsistant. Sometimes it sticks better than anything out there. Other times it seems to behave the same way until a week or month later. Like anything else, scrub well, rinse and dry before applying. I havn't even seen the stuff at Lowes in nearly a year now.

I sent you mail because I was having trouble getting this to post. But try Lowe's in teh city and MD. Also try local Ace Hardware stores. They frequently have items the bigger stores do not carry. Last summer at the beach I went into an Ace to get some pipe strapping, long story. But they had peel & seal in a 3 foot wide roll and sold it by the foot.
