tires on the track?

does anyone use there street tires on the track. because racing tires are expensive and i was wondering how much of an effect they help when your racing. how quickly would a common high performance tire wear if it was used on the track? thanks a lot

Well, my current set of Dunlop W-10's currently has 4 track days on them and I expect 2 more, maybe 3 before they're dead. If you don't have much/any experience driving on a track you should stay away from racing tires for several sessions. The street tires will give you better feedback and help you learn the limits of the cars handling more safely.

BTW, I assume we are talking roadcourses here and not drag strip.

Look for a street tire than handles higher temps well. BFG KD, Bridge S02/S03, SumHTRZ2, F1GS, PZero, maybe Yoko AVS-i I would think. No Falken Azenis as they overheat easily.

Only after you learn the limits of the car should you move to Hoosier or the V700's.

I am new to autoXing, but man did EVERYONE have Falken Azenis in STS and STX except me and my $60 yokohamas from tirerack. Even the national champ from last year had them. I did notice them "watering" their tires after every lap though. Also to note that Blade did not seem happy with Azenis the last I knew. Maybe he will keep them =P

Now if I could learn how to push my car more and not go to slow....
I wouldn't keep getting whooped on.

Yeah, Azenis have arguably become the ST cheater tire. Here's the trophy winners who ran Falken in this years National Tours.

Ft Meyers - 2 of 5 ran, two Kumho (same car) and one BFG
San Diego - 4 of 4
Houston - 3 of 4, one Bridgestone
Atwater - 4 of 4
Rome - 4 of 5, one BFG
Peru - none of 5, 2 Bridgestone, 3 BFG
Seattle - 3 of 4, one Kumho

So 20 of 31 winners had Falkens. You don't NEED em to win but it sure doesn't hurt your chances.

Your right I wasn't very impressed with them. I ended up exchanging them for a new set of S02's. The Falken are really good tires but not as good as the S02's IMO. The falkens are really responsive, turn in is really quick vs the S02's. That's due to the 3.8" of sidewall vs 4.4". My main concern was maxium traction. The falkens gripped about as well as the S03's or my old set of S02's. BTW my old tires are about 1 year old and have been heat cycled countless times and aren't nearly as sticky as they were when they were new.

i wanna try the kumho v700.. i need to look for some cheap rims to run them on. rims that would clear my 300zx brakes.

Would matching 16" 300ZX wheels work? Either the 16x7.5 or 16x8's? Saw those pretty reasonable on the Z boards.
