For auto-x only? Roadrace/track use too? Combination of that and street use? And rain or not?

Mostly for the street, and a little track use.

Well if you don't mind your speed-o-meter being a little off I'd suggest getting the Kumho Ecsta MX, Falken Azenis Sport, or Bridgestone S03's in 225/45/17. Out of those three I'd pick the falkens. Besides the falken being a great preformance tire it's pretty well behaved. I didn't get a chance to drive them in the rain, but I heard they're not really that bad. Or you can get the Goodyear Eagle RSA in your stock size

Good Luck and take your time and do your research.

why do you reccomend a smaller size than stock? Less sidewall motion??

Yes, less sidewall motion and quicker turn-in. Also if you do a search on tires for 225/50/17 on tireracks site you'll only get 8 result and two of them are the RE92's tire just different speed ratings. None are performance summer tires.
