Just tried autox yesterday!

Hey Cheston!
I just tried it for the first time at Boundary Bay airport near the Canada/U.S. border.

I could only boost during the slaloms but the track was fast. That meant that I was running out of room just as I got on the boost and was approaching a turn. The Max felt the best through the slalom.

I was running on 235/45-17 Falken Z12s at 34lbs pressure all around. My tires just howled around the corners and wide sweep turns. At times it felt like I was about to spin out. A couple of times I nearly hit the cones but I was able to recover.

I set my front Koni sports to maximum firmess at the start. I had the rears at the softest setting. I've got the Courtesy Nissan FSTB and the Stillen rsb.

Everybody there just loved hearing the Blitz bov at the last stage where there was a slalom. The turbo'ed 240sx's and 300zx's bov sounded nicer than mine IMO but I've been told that it sounds just as nice.

Here's a link to my writeup:
http://forums.northwestnissans.com/s...&threadid=2775

I found out today that the other stock 240sx's (NWN crew) I went down with were doing 63's as well! Not bad for a "big luxury" car (as the flagman put it). I even had a passenger on the run with the 63!

Re: Just tried autox yesterday!

holy cow. that sounded like a great experience... the big track with SC is great cuz i can reel in all those nimbly cars and pass em. but with Autox. i was afraid to boost it up so that it would lose traction...

looks like i gotta try it.

I had a friend of a friend ride with me on the 3rd run (looks as stocky as you!). I wanted to see if the additional weight on the passenger side would help. He's never sat in a Max before but he commented that the ride felt really good and was surprised at its nimbleness.
Yeah, you have to try it out!
As for the road course I understand that the brakes will be worked hard. I have an opportunity coming up to join a 510 group for an open house meet at Mission raceway. How did your brakes hold up?

i had porterfield R4 race pads. NO FADING !!! even when i was on them hard cuz i like to enter turns hot, and scare those hundah pukes in their fixed up preludes. mwuhaha..

but yea. held up great. no real need for the Z brake conversion if you have good track pads.. but now with my brembo 13" kit, i wanna try it again. im sure it will be great.. but yah. stock brakes with ss lines and good pads can hang well.

you shouldn't have any brake pad during autoX, if you're on stock pads, maybe, but if you get the portefield track/street pads, then yo'ure fine, especially considering you have some time in between the runs that cools down the brakes.

on the track on the other hand, the track/street pads started to fade fairly quickly, so I'm thinking, for next year to get carbotec pads and slotted brembo rotors, and only use 'em to go to the track with

Thought before you said you did not like slotted rotors? Or am I thinking of someone else.

Run stock rotors for autocrossing. Slotting or cross-drilling doesn't give a noticable performance advantage. Most mildly modified Maximas should fit into Street Touring S, more heavily modified ones into Street Modified.

For auto-x, do NOT run race pads. They won't get up to temperature. High performance street pads are generally perfect- Porterfield R4S, Axxis Ultimates, EBC Greenstuff, Axxis/Stillen Metal Masters, etc.

- Brakes depend on the course. I've run at Sebring and at Roebling Road, both times with the same Porterfield R4-S pads.

Sebring is extremely demanding on the brakes. Its a bunch of straights connected by some U-turns... so you'll be hard on the gas and hard on the brakes for long periods of time. I cooked the brake fluid going into turn 10 - pedal just went straight to the floor... thank goodness for the paved run-off area.

Roebling only has one real straight, so the brakes get up to temp and then cool down for the rest of the lap. I had no problems there.

I love the Porterfields - they are fantastic pads for street and track and AutoX. I highly recommend them. Don't bother with rotors unless you need to replace the weak, warp-if-you-breathe-on-them Nissan rotors. Oh, and I found this out the hard way... don't ever resurface brake rotors, just buy new ones. The rotors get thinner and weaker and the shops rarely get it right. I've had mine resurfaced twice and they warped within 500 miles both times. I'll be getting some Powerslot rotors at some point.
