Not funny at all. According to a couple sources it seems the tire shop that supplied the lugs provided some SAE size very close to the metric 12mm needed. They fit by hand and torque up to around 70ftlb fine - anything beyond that though and they strip. Apparently there was little if any damage to the car itself.

1/2"-20 lug nuts will do that on a 12 x 1.25mm stud. ran into that once myself after I ordered some wheels from Tire Rack.. They came with a set of 1/2" lugs, and I was smart enough to notice it as soon as I tried to torque them down. looked at the box and "Awww sheit"
call 1800-tirerack or whatever. "you idjits sent me the wrong lug nuts! I have a Nissan and you sent me lugs for a Mustang!"
"Oops. we'll send you the right ones today. you'll have them tomorrow."
"Okie, thanks."

Now, why this goober didn't catch it when he tried to torque his wheels, I dunno..
Fault #1. lug nut seller/purchaser.
fault #2. torque wrench pusher.
fault #3. tech at the event. the houston region checks random lugs on the car to make sure they're torqued. we caught one guy a couple years ago that superglued two lugnuts onto his wheels after the studs broke mounting his tires. he didn't want to sit out the day, so he glued the but+stud in place and hoped he'd get past the tech guy. DOH.

Can someone go ahead and post this a few more times? I don't think four is enough.

to me it looks like he just forgot to tighten them.

if that was the case, they would have taken longer to come off...with alot of visible wobbling immediately on launch that he would have noticed.

these clearly stripped right off, and Brian's explanation makes alot of sense.

funny you mention this. autozone pulled this same $hit off on me today. i went to buy ONE lug nut cuz i lost one somehow during my brake swap. i ask for a 12x1.25, buy one, go home, put it on and tighten it all the way. it felt completly normal. as i gave it one last twist to tighten fully, it stripped and became loose. i took it off and sure enough it said 1/2"-20 on it. now i have to go back and get the correct one. perhaps a new stud too

the right rear 1/4 was completely FUBARd. I'm sure significant brake and suspension damage also occured.

When I had my '85 Volvo, I had nightmares like those videos. Luckily, when my volvo did die, the engine harness just melted and I safely pulled to the side.
