Retirement and video from last weeks event
For the past 2yrs my 4th gen has only seen street duty. I now officially retire it from autocrossing forever, and demote it back to daily driving
It took me a while to listen to what everyone was saying about the A32's shortcomings. Now I understand. Enjoy.

Rear beam = no fun
IMO A32 are better on the road course than auto-x but there are better cars out there for both type of events.
With the roll center so low in the front and so high in the back it doesn't help. Plus to be competitive you have to mod the Maximas alot more than other cars. Like my new sig says...

I am thinking more and more about getting a S14 for track stuff. A turboed SR or KA would put me in the same class as a N/A VQ for some of the time attack clubs around here and make more power. Plus with the 5 lug option I can use the same rims I have now on the front and get some wider RPF1s for the rears.
Then again who wants to see me shoe horn 275s on the front of my car with custom flared fenders?
#14
I'm fairly certain, the fronts stick out a bit (~1") from the fender at static ride height; but that may be with 295 front, 315 rear but I can't remember their current tire selection.
There are better SM vehicles, but the 240sx is a great budget option.
My pick for a money no object auto-x project, especially if the Evo's get moved to ASP:

See all those stickers? that's how much it costs to make a S2000 go fast.
the pic above was with 275f, 295 r. He said the front fenders need a roll and slight pull, but he added some more camber over the weekend and they fit pretty well.
the good thing about 240s is they're cheap and quick. parts are readily available, especially buying used stuff from the dorifto crowd. only drawback is some of those guys think their stuff is worth its weight in gold and/or it's been abused so you gotta watch out. The really good stuff is same price whether you're buying Honda or Nissan though. A set of Penskes will cost you an arm and a leg no matter what car they're for.
but you can buy an S14, turbo it, coilovers, cage, brakes, and have a FAST car for under $10k.

Sometimes, but not usually in the rust belt.

shipping a car is cheaper than you think. much cheaper then paying 2x the price for a car locally.
a LOT of the 240 guys set up their cars like crap. lower and more modded is not always better (Think of how many Nissan engineers spent years developing the suspension on these cars. You think some 25 yr old "engineer" in China is going to do better by looking at some numbers on a scratch pad and gluing some metal parts together with cheap heim joints?)
There's a handful of us that have just a few parts and are outrunning 75% of them on track.
No, I wasn't there. We both post on the same forum. I stole his pic and descriptions off there.

Yeah, I'll admit trying to auto-x a Maxima puts you at a huge disadvantage, but it's all the more fun when you beat cars that are way out of your league. Check out these results from the last BMW event I ran at:
LINK
Considering I'm on summer tires I think I held my own. Heck, Josh only beat me by 1.5 sec with AWD, IRS, more power/torque and stickier tires! Maybe once I get a real job I will look at an E30/E36/S14, but until then I will continue to embarrass the majority of stock BMW owners.....

You should have come this week. The course was 100% opposite...super-tight, super-slick (especialy during my 3rd-5th runs when it rained), tons and tons of transitions/slaloms/switchbacks and pretty much no place to "get on it". I think me and darius were sideways about half the time, to boot.
On second thought, you would have totally hated it, be happy you didn't come
Here's someone else's vid of the course (it looks easier in a roadster before the rain). Wish I had my GoPro with me today, would have caught some massive dorifto action in the rex...

Pic of me and Darius, just because someone here was talking 240s. He and I had similar times today on our only runs in the dry before the rain came.

Nick, in my defense that course was tailor-made for a maxima. Wide open, no quick transitions. I would have loved it in my 5th gen. My car's advantages didn't help much there.

My Michelin PS2s were made to run in the rain, I'm pissed I had to miss this event. My anger has been dissipated by 2 hours on a Polaris RZR 800
That thing ******* rocked!! I just have to dominate that Miata the next 4 events to get in first place! BTW, congrats on setting the FTD for non-BMWs!
BTW, I thought the video was a retirement video, not a welcome/ break-in video

I'd love to take credit, but the results are wrong. That 52.xxx run they posted for me was one of my rain runs and was very slow. It should be a 62.xxx. My fast run was 55.xxx, which was 2nd in X2 behind a modded STi who ran in the dry morning session. If my last 3 runs had been dry I'm almost positive I would have beaten his time, since I was only a second off with a terrible run. The course was wicked slick. Even with your PS2s you would have been all over the place. Darius was sideways pretty much the whole time, lol. His best time was about same as mine, both in our 2nd runs before the rain came.

BTW, I have to ask Matt, do you know if S13s are that much different than S14s in the fender area? Granted, it has a lot to do with offsets, but Darius has 265s in the rear on his S13 and was rubbing pretty bad with a conservative drop. What kind of wheels are you on?

me? I'm on 225/45 RE01Rs. Stock size for me. I wanted to go 245 or 255, but they were sold out during that Tire Rack clearance a couple years ago on RE01Rs so I just got the skinnies. I need some wider wheels (7.5" is what I have) and wider tires, for sure. I think I can stuff 255s or 265s in there without issue.

The S13 has much less fender clearance than the S14 chassis. with some mods you can gain more (roll fenders, fender flares, fiberglass overfenders, etc) room and get crazy wide, but most cars just don't have the power to need anything wider than about a 265.
My S14 has 17x8 +25 wheels on it and I can run 10mm spacers on them with 235/40/17 tires and they don't rub the stock (unrolled) rear fenders. there's TONS of room on the inside too. i.e. I could easily run a 275 or so tire on the rear without rubbing. the fronts become more of a function of offset AND suspension selection. different brands of coilovers have different mounting ear sizes and different camber settings due to the holes drilled in the ears and the camber adjustment at the top of the strut. there's a bazillion variations to deal with there.
