Wheels and Wheel Cleaner (2002)
#5
Well, because I wash my car pretty often, I don't usually have a lot of brake dust crud on my wheels. When I rotate my tires (about every 7500 miles) I clean the rims really well with a brush and regular car wash soap. (Zymol) Then I use some Klasse AIO. I don't think the dirt sticks to the AIO very well, cause they come very clean each wash with just the Zymol.

I use A2Z, it's one of the best (ie, strongest) along with the 2 Meguiar's products and that new (and cheaper) Orange Blast wheel cleaner. It's never caused me any problems and has true spray on, hose off performance. Some people keep using Simple Green, but I don't know why they bother since it's not strong enough to clean everything off without rubbing anyway. Also, I've heard enough horror stories from experienced detailers that I wouldn't try it myself.
Yes, I'm pretty sure your 2k2 wheels should be clear coated just like most OEM wheels these days.
Whatever you do when cleaning them, don't allow any cleaner (especially wheel cleaner!) to dry out on the wheel. That's why all of them tell you not to use them on very warm or hot wheels.

Actually, now that I think about it, if I had a 2k2 with those 6 spoke wheels, I'd just wax them and use car soap too. It's the gentlest, safest, and most eco-friendly way by far. Not to mention cheapest.
The ONLY reason I use A2Z and other powerful cleaners is because I have those hard to clean 3rd Gen SE turbine wheels, and the other cars I detail are no better!

On the inside I usually use simple green mixture (50 part sg/50 part water) and a brush, but it is almost impossible to get behind the 6 spokes and the back of the 6 spokes themselves. About every 6 months, I take them off and give a good cleaning and wax (inside and out). I was looking for something that could really clean the crud off but only use it 3 to 4 times a year. I heard good and bad about A2Z. I just don't want to ruin my wheels.

I have been using Eimann Fabrik's Hi Intensity for a few years and I love it.
But to answer your original question, the 2K2 rims are clearcoated. One thing I definitely recommend for the rims is to clay and then seal them with a polymer selaant like Klasse or Meguiar's #20 to keep the brake dust from sticking to them.
