If you have an open element filter/intake, make sure to cover it with a plastic bag. Use spritzes of water from the hose, and not a heavy flow.

Once done, start the motor, let her run for a little bit to warm up and dry off.

I did mine this weekend, no problems.

What packetattack said is right - just short spritzes, not a heavy flow. Any type of blower also may help in drying the engine quickly.

But how to clean then if your engine is really really really dirty? Couldn't I just hose it down with lots of degreaser and high pressure waterflow, then just let it dry fo a few days and be okay?

Use ample amounts of degreaser. I use Castrol Super Clean degreaser. Spray it liberally on sections of the motor. Work on one section at a time. Then using a brush, get in there and give it a good scrubbing. Rinse and continue process.

I would not let the car sit and dry for a few days. Start it up once you're done and go for a drive, the engine bay nice and hot. Most water that was leftover should be gone after that drive. If you find any standing water, spray it out with a blower or can of compressed air.

To avoid making a new thread on a very similar topic...
I finally got the 91 runnin, and next up is some badly needed body work. However the engine was sprayed with rust proof in its first year, and has since been coated in dirt and then baked on from the engine. This **** will gladly come off on your hand. I've used degreaser and sat there scrubbing with moderate results. Any tips for getting this ugly crap off? Did I mention it's ugly? It's a white car and the engine bay is an assortment of ugly colors now. UGLY
