Long story short, I discovered the hard way that I stepped in it. What should I use?

 

Burn them.

Or try Folex carpet cleaner.

 

Get a brush, soap, and water. Put some elbow grease into it and you should be ok. Dump the brush when you're done.

 

Any carpet cleaner that you can use in your house will work. Elbow grease, a brush, and a decent cleaner should work perfectly.

 

and try not to get your face in there

 

If you have acess to one(i.e. self-carwash), use a pressure washer & a little soap. I do my mats once a year and they come out looking brand new. Its increadable how much dirt gets pushed out.....a little dog poo wont stand a chance

 

Considering that dog manure is what you call a "special" stain, you might want to use a Bissell Little Green Machine or steam cleaner in order to effectively clean that after scrubbing. The main reason for this is that you want to ensure that the bacteria is removed along with the poop.

Personally, I do mine in several steps depending on severity of the grime. When they're just dirty, I spray mine with a diluted all purpose cleaner (Simple Green or Castrol Super Clean), then scrub with the brush attachment on my PC. I follow this up with a steam cleaner with its solution, and suck everything out very good.
When they're really nasty, I do the above, and add a step of spraying them with my pressure washer (1300 psi) before using my steam cleaner. You'll be amazed at the sand that comes out with a pressure washer!
The PC brush is excellent for the scrubbing duties, saving your arms from an intense workout. And it really helps to lift and "un-mat" the nap, making them look fresh and new. It also helps the steam cleaning be more effective as it seperates the carpet fibers so you can suck the crud out better.

With the inherent objectionable odor from dog poo, I'd probably use something that disinfects and deodorizes. But I guess this would depend on how well the general cleaning was done.
