Wheel Cleaning

I rotated my tires the other day and decided to clean the wheels while they were off. So the face is looking good, but the inner side is awful. What can I do to get them like new again??
I tried Gunk, I think and it didn't do a thing. Any ideas?

I used black magic wheel cleaner and a wheel brush, some wheels came out better than others, but you will probably have to apply and scrub a few times to get the desired result...

If they haven't been cleand in a while it will take many applications of whatever you use and a lot of scrubbing. I have had good luck with Simple Green. Just make sure you rinse it well after each application.

A lotta hard scrubbing with a non abrasive brush, and a clay bar for the spots that are really stuck on there good.

Simple Green's been safe enough on the clearcoat on the stock wheels. I would try some P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner. Let it sit.

I just used some diluted heavy duty degreaser and scrubbed with something that wouldn't scratch the clear coat. The insides of my wheels went from a brown rusty color to a bright silver color. Took 2 tries on each wheel, they came out flawless. They were clean enough to bring inside the house.

I use Eimann Fabrik's Hi Intensity All Purpose Cleaner to clean rims. As others have mentioned, some products will require more than one application to remove the grime effectively.

I used Meguire's HOT WHEELS...........of course I used it on the face of my wheels but when I was washing the wheels off.......a whole bunch of stuff was comin off the back of the wheel too.........I finally used a rag and tried a little spot and I could actually see the wheel!

The built up dirt inside your rims is brake dust. Get a can of brake cleaner, spray it on and rub a little with a scotch brite scrub pad. Cleans them up very easily. Brake cleaner does not attack paint so the finish will not be harmed. Wash the wheel throughly with soap and water to remove any residue, then polish the face and wax both the inside and the face of the wheel. The wax will make it much easier to keep them clean in the future.

you should clean off excess with wheel cleaner and a brush....than get rubbing compound or a scratch remover that will take all the grime off guaranateed than after ur done...wax your rims and the inside too...it definitly makes cleaning in the future easier...ive done it. wax is a MUST FOR RIMS. just use regular car wax.

Tom,

Can you use brake cleaner to clean the wheels too? I know it'll be $$$ but can you?

^^^I think he said you can. is it really the much $$$? It sounds like a good idea if it doesn't affect the finish at all. My wheels are awful on the inside. I'm sure after I clean all four of the wheels I'll get rid of probably about a pound of unsuspended mass...
