Simple solution to headlight haze
Simple solution to headlight haze
Hey guys, I searched as best as I can using Google's "site:" function, but never found this ever being mentioned, in regards to the haze the 2K2-2K3 clears tend to get through time.
There have been some walkthroughs dealing with sandpapering through increasing grit numbers, all the way to polishing.
Well, I was speaking with my friend who happens to own his own shop (he's very particular about all cars he works on, especially his), and also owns a couple of cars that have HID clears similar to ours (S2000/BMW). This was when I first picked up my Max, and I asked him about the haze. He said this is a normal thing, and that he uses brass cleaner to clean his headlights. I haven't had a chance to test this theory until tonight, and I must say, for about 5-10 mins of work, without having to take the headlights off, I am pretty surprised. The pics below don't do it justice, as it was taken with a camera phone that didn't pick up the garage lighting too well, but you can still see the significant difference.
I used:
• Brasso - 2.97 at Lowe's
• Terrycloth for the application
• An old, but clean and soft sacrificial t-shirt for polishing
I simply followed the directions on the can regarding application, which is apply with a clean cloth/rag, rubbing vigorously, then polish with a soft, clean cloth/rag.

This was just an experiment on my part that turned out well, fortunately. If I was more prepared, I would have bought one of those powerball polishers, and I bet the headlights would be gleaming even more.

Now, that's without knowing exactly how the plastic polish works though, as it might also be abrasive.
Brasso's still cheaper.
The whole sandpaper method is a bit of work but worth the end result especially if you have pitting or light scratches. However, if the brasso did what you needed it to do then you can't beat it. Good job. I used Mequires Plastx too and it came out great.
All you need to do now is clear out the orange lenz...
