liquid clay... :(

So, I went out and bought this product... turtle wax liquid clay.
Let me state that I have NEVER CLAYED A CAR before and I wasn't really sure what to expect. My paint is in pretty bad shape. Tons of rock chips, deep scratches. Years of neglect and parking outside 24/7. I don't have the funds right now to start a repaint. And I know... ... I will try for pictures in the very near future.

Here's what I noticed....
1) The product claims to remove road tar... that's just not the case.
2) The liquid clay claims to remove oxidation. That could be true.
3) will restore a smoothness to paint... well, it is smoother, but a real clay bar would do a better job I'm sure.
Here's the steps I used.
1) washed car using turtle wax car wash. I like that product. I also have a microfiber wash mit and that thing is AWESOME.
2) applied liquid clay.
3) rewashed car using new water.
4) used makita orbital polisher to apply a liquid cutter. Meguires can't remember right now.
5) re-washed car using new water.
6) applied Meguires polish using the Makita.
7) Hand applied wax. used a mothers product I had lying around.

I'm going to take back the liquid clay as I am just not happy with it. Did it do what it advertises? Almost. Somewhat smoother, I still have road tar that I had to take off with some tar remover. The paint is still rough to the touch. Not nearly as rough, but not nearly as smooth as I hoped it would be. Should I have bought a real clay bar? Yes. The store only had the mothers yellow one. I've read not too many good things about that one. I'm trying to find "clay magic" but have not had any luck. I'm going to try wallmart tomorrow.

I've never considered trying the liquid stuff. I was figuring there was no way it would be equal to the real thing. Thanks for confirming that.

Yeah, you should most definitely get a REAL clay bar and try it again

Oh, and be careful not to get a bar that is too coarse because it will cause slight swirling and or scratches if you don't keep it lubricated enough.

Nothing beats the real deal, but remember not to do it too often

I just ordered the Hi-Tech Sponge.

Looks promising, and from every single review I have read, it is essentially equal to a fairly agressive clay, and will probably scratch the paint, but is the best damn thing for white cars (industrial fallout/rail dust) and windows, both of which I deal with a lot

I'm thinking since Last Touch is SOOOO slick (many people dilute it 1:1 for claying the stuff is so slick) that it shouldn't scratch the paint bad, if at all.

I'll be waiting for the review of both products. Looks very interesting.

I'm glad you told me because I have the liquid wax and it works fine. I was considering getting the liquid clay b/c I too have annoying scratches and rock chips. I went and got an estimate that came out to $1,100. If theres a cheaper way around that I"ll take it.

Be warned as Liquid clay WILL NOT remove scratches, chips, or anything. This is an over-hyped product!

If you want to remove scratches by hand, get a Meguiar's foam pad, and some ScratchX, and work it in like no tomorrow. Top it off with a polish like Deep Crystal #2 or M7, wax, and call it a day...well more like a weekend because it will probably take a whole weekend non-stop to do the whole car (do it in a garage! NOT direct sunlight!)

Should be getting it delivered today, so let's see.

I chose that product over the real deal because of the advertising. Also, I have never clayed a car before and was a little "concerned" about claying it. turtle wax looked ok and the package stated that it would remove all the same stuff as the actual clay product. its another case of "almost as good as or as good as" just isn't.

Claybar in Canada costs min. $25. Liquid clay 17.99-19.99. looks like it would do more than 3 cars with the liquid. Real clay maybe 3 cars.

I'm going to take some pictures right now. Should have them posted later....

so here's some pictures of the after....

rear bumper

front bumper

hood

hood

as you can see the paint is pretty rough. The liquid clay did not leave any reside except for on the front bumper that is noticable unless you get right up on it. The front bumper you can see the reside from a little ways back. I scrubbed and scrubbed, used the fine cutter and I can't get rid of that white around the edge of the rock chips.
ohhhh, but the paint is smooth. I like it when it rains +1.
