Removing chrome plating from wheels?

I have a set of wheels that are chrome plated but peeling, and I need to remove it all off in order to paint them. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Quick guess...sand paper? You're saying that you're going to paint them, so wouldn't you have to do that regardless?

wow too bad that would take forever.

Try going to an auto store or hardware store to look for a chemical that removes chrome. I think your best bet if you are going to paint them would be to go to a powdercoater and see if they can sandblast the wheels for you for cheap.

Aircraft stripper will take it right off.

I will try the aircraft stripper first, as this is what I originally pondered about. Is it something I apply/wipe or something I let the wheel soak in?

Spray it on, let soak, use a wire brush. Then I believe it just washes away. I've never done it myself but this is what I imagine the process would be. Make sure you're only using the stripper on metal.

Basically, the first six links say "pay a pro". it's a ***** to do and you can't do it at home properly.. not without naaaasty chemicals that will melt you and your house.

Thanks Matt for the clarification.

My apologies for the far off information. Somehow I thought paint ~ chrome.

I have used aircraft stripper on my stock 96 sawblades before I did a paint job...Altough they were not chrome, it easily bubbled up the clear coat and I power washed and scraped them with a wall paper remover

yeah... aircraft stripper will peel paint and powdercoating off. but chrome is an actual metal plating. it's not paint. it won't just dissolve when you pour paint stripper on it.

I would think that if its already peeling off media blasting it would take care of it pretty quickly. Media blast them and then paint them. It would be very quick.

What did you end up using to remove the chrome?

Unfortunately, the chrome is an actual tarnish after it meets oxygen so media blasting or nasty chemicals including dipping it to deplate it are the only way to go. Good luck

Air craft stripper can remover the old chrome. Unless its hard chrome which need extra work and materials like sand blasting.
