FRAM oil filter question...

How is the FRAM 'Double Guard' filter? It's 7 or 8 dollars. Is that acceptable? It seemed to be the best one Wal-MArt had. I didn't really want to go all the way to the dealership just for the filter.

Besides having that black stuff on the bottom for grip, which really helps, you can find MUCH better filters out there.

What kind are recommended? Let's say something I could get at an Autozone or Advance Aout Parts.

K&N and mobil 1 are some of the best out there, but you will pay for them

OK, I'll jump in. First, let me say that I'm no oil filter expert. But from what I've read on here the past 3-4 months no one seems to like Fram. They say they are POS. Some people prefer to stick with the OEM Nissan filters, you can get them online or in bulk packs from the dealership for as low as $4 each. I've also heard good things about the Purolator PureOne Microfilter. (Not the regular Purolator, the PureOne) I think they go for about $6-$7. Only problem is that they don't make them for the 3.5 VQ yet, only the 3.0. K&N and Mobil 1 are great filters if you don't mind paying $10-$11 each. I'm going with OEM filters for the first few changes until I switch to synthetic oil, then I think I'll be using either K&N or Mobil 1...whichever is cheaper.

If you have ever seen the inside of the Fram filter, and compare it to OEM or say K&N or Mobil 1 you will realize why people don't like them. They are crap filters in my opinion. Like BiggD23 and others have stated; K&N, Mobil, and OEM filters are great. Even the ones from NAPA are good, if I remember correctly. I use the Nissan filters and on occasion the ones from Mobil.

I use Bosch. I think it has a semi-sythentic filter media. Good single pass efficiency and its cheaper than the Mobil 1 and K&N.

PL-14459 & PL-24458 & PL-14620 and PL-14622 all fit the VQ35DE. I have a PL-24458 (largest) on my car now.

Didn't we go through this the other day? None of those are meant for the 3.5 liter V6 that we have, look up those part numbers on Purolator's website and they are meant for 2 liter 4 cylinder cars. I'm sure they fit but I wouldn't want to have any problems with my warranty because I was using an oil filter that was meant for a much smaller engine. Especially not when there are other options designed for the 3.5 VQ. I look at it like this...if they were meant to be used on the 3.5 VQ why wouldn't Purolator just add it to the list for those part numbers? Just my $.02.

The filters do not know what engine they are on. If it has room, has 20mm x 1.5mm thread size ,anti-drain rubber and a 8-10 psi bypass valve, and correct gasket fit, then ANY filter could be used.

If you do not want to use the largest ( for faster flow and better filtration) filter , that's OK with me, but I always have and will keep up this habit.

Too often. For some reason you 5th gen guys like re-inventing the wheel several times.

VQ30 and VQ35 filters will all interchange. The only exception I'm aware of is the STP S6941 oversized filter, which has rubbed the wheel well off a member's VQ35 equipped Maxima. No such issue is prevalent on VQ30 equipped Maximas, regardless of year.

Aftermarket filter makers are only using what cross refererences what Nissan is OEM'ing for that particular vehicle.

The smaller and cheaper (65F00 OEM) filters used on the late 2k1 and 2k2 on Maximas are a COST CUTTING MOVE BY NISSAN. Nothing more.

The aftermarket equivalents to the "new" 65F00 OEM filter are simply being used by Purolator, Mobil 1 (e.g. M1-108), etc. This filter has been used for years on the SR20DE Sentras and other Nissan apps. That "2 liter 4 cylinder" reference you make is EXACTLY what Nissan is now spec'ing for VQ35s and late VQ30s made in 2001.

Your best oil filter bets for VQ35DE engines are:

Mobil M1-110
Bosch 3323
Nissan OEM 15208-9E000

I can't personally try others, as I don't have a VQ35 to see if they work. All 3 above are excellent choices.

I'm not a big Purolator fan, but the 24458 oversized filter will work as well.

I'll bet in 24 hours this is asked again.

Most late model Nissans use 14psi bypass valves, not 8-10 psi.

I know, and whether or not the filter would fit or function correctly was not my issue. I've never tried but I'll take your word that they fit. My only problem was if you have a problem say 2 years down the line (still under warranty), and you produce years worth of receipts showing that you've been using that filter on your car the whole time, could Nissan then give you a hard time about it? That's all.

Hey, now that we've covered the oil filter thread for today...does anyone know where I can buy come clear corners for my Maxima?

I would recommend the Bosch, you can find it at Autozone for about $5. It is very good qulity filter that is the closest I to the Nissan filter (I opened both of these filters and I think the Bosch has even more filtering media than Nissan) just my opinion.

I KNOW the OEM nissan filter has a 14 psi valve, but the 8-10 psi would give greater and faster flow under restrictive conditions.

The best Wal-Mart has is the Supertech filters! They are made by Champion Labs.

Let's not forget the Amsoil SDF13. It's expensive and it's really good. I personally use the M1-110.

You didn't know that the VQ30DE engines can't use the M1-105 Mobil filter, so I have to assume a low common denominator.

That 8-10psi comes at the sacrifice of actually filtering the oil as often as Nissan specifies. I suppose if you visit 5k and up on a very consistent basis (e.g. Honda engines) a lower bypass valve setting is a good idea to maintain maximum oil flow.

What's up Bill, long time no speak my friend. I've been spending waaay to much time in Korea these months. Anyway, back to business...did you ever confirm an oversized synthetic filter for the VQ30 5th gen? I've been using the trusty STP 6941 for some time now (and forgetting each time to do the analysis -- ) but just wondering where things stood these days.
Regards my friend.
