Mobil 1 Oil

I picked up a case from Costco of Mobil 1 5W30 oil but it says on the box "Newer car formula", I didn't see any other kinds sold there so I picked it up. Is this the right stuff for my car? If not I can always return it, but I just wanted to check before I used it.

I think its just saying the formula/method used in producing the mobil 1 oil is new or improved.

It didnt say this on the 10W30 though. When I looked on Mobil 1 it said this.

5W-30 All temps
You can use Mobil 1® with SuperSyn™ 5W-30 with confidence. This viscosity is also available in Mobil Drive Clean Oil™ and Mobil Drive Clean Plus™ – both the Newer Vehicle and High Mileage formulas.

I thought there was just one mobil 1 synthetic?

It's just marketing terms and has little to do with reality.

SuperSyn = full synthetic
Drive Clean = dino
Drive Clean Plus = blend

5W-30 should be fine for you. If you experience any oil consumption, going to the 10W-30 or another brand may help that.

I used 5W-30 in the beginning as well, but i was told by my mechanic to stick with the mobil 1 10w-30 cause it was made for cars with higher mileage as specified on the container. 1997...86,000

What's on the container is pure marketing. If you were to look at the spec sheets, the 10W-30 is actually a touch thicker than the 5W-30. Either will work just fine. 86k isn't really high mileage for a well cared for VQ.

The reason you see me recommend 10W-30 sometimes is that it seems to be a more stable formulation for M1, especially when worked in high temps.

I switched to Mobil 1 plus for high milage vehicles, I have over 75,000 miles I thought it would be good insurance. Extra 40 cents a quart is not going to kill me for peace of mind. I have 76,500 miles.

The fallacy is thinking any oil at exactly x number of miles is good for your particular engine. An oil analysis will help inform you of your engine's condition and whether an investment in a "high mileage" engine oil is worth it.

Unless you're consuming excessive amounts of oil between changes, "high mileage" oils aren't buying you anything over their regular dino counterparts. It's been proven through analyses more than I care to mention.

As a suggestion, I'd stay away from the M1 that has 'high milege' for the 10w-30. This is from the first batch of SuperSyn that Mobil produced when they changed from the TriSynthetic and it does not contain the Moly AW and friction additive that was added subsequently. Costco is notorious for buying up old and/or outdated stock at cheap prices. I think M1 is great but get the newer formula with Moly. For 10w-30 I believe the new formula says multi-vehicle. Same situation with the 5w-30 but I think the 'newer vehicle' labeling stayed the same so look for a place like WalMart that has newer stock if you want to be sure you have the new formula.
