Do I need a TBN for gear oil?

So I was thinking of sending in my old gear oil to be analyzed when I get MT-90. Is it useful to have a TBN for gear oil, or is it just useful for engine oil?

TBN isn't applicable to gear oil. The lab will let you know what the TAN (total acid number) is if requested. The TAN gives you an indication of how oxidized the oil is and similar to TBN, gives you an idea of it's useful life.

OK thanks, so do I have to pay the 10 bucks for the TAN then?

Probably. I've never used Blackstone for gear oil, always CTC, so I'm not sure.

Blackstone doesn't do a TAN analysis. I don't why, they just don't offer it.

I wouldn't pay for a TBN as it won't really tell you anything in this instance.
