Do fuel injector cleaners work?

Has anyone had positive experiences with them?

Bump! I want to know which ones actually work

I'll be buying the BG 44k Fuel System Cleaner in a few weeks to see how good it is. Hopefully that'll make my MPG higher

I read an article in the Toronto Star - Wheels section a couple years ago.

Basically they said that if you put some injector cleaner in with each tank it kept the injectors pretty clean.

They also did a comparison with a cleaning system called "Motorvac". Where they disconnect the fuel supply and pretty much run cleaning fluid straight through your injectors. The results were very good.

If you put additives in the tank each time, you end up paying quite a bit and have to remember to add them each time. If you left it for a couple years and had the Motorovac cleaning done it would cost less and end up with the same results if not better.

I had it done to my fathers POS mini-van. It did definately improve the idle and the mileage. I think it cost around $90CDN a couple years ago.

For my money its worth it to have a professional cleaning done every couple years if its a car you really love. Or once every 5 years if its just "transportation" to you.

CM.

I have been using STP every oil change since I bought my car with 120k, I now have 275+k and have not had any injector problems, so it must work.

After testing out some cleaners from the store, the only one that worked for me was the Chevron with Techron Fuel System Cleaner (Pep Boys dropped the price to $4.88 )

I'll see how the BG 44k cleaner works when I buy it

BG 44K

There is a thread in 5th gens about the BG 44K, we are all in love with this stuff. You will feel the difference.

over on n i s s a n x . com you will find a thread titled BG 44K, and I posted the cheapest place online where you could buy it, but it can probably be had in area shops/dealers around your house if you look around.

Berryman's ChemTool

Berryman's ChemTool: $2.37 @ Wal-mart. Better than anything else! Plus, you KNOW what's in the can!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I've heard that chevron's techron is very good (also very cheap as noted above!). BG44k will run you $15-20/can. It's recommended to use every 30k by a lot of people. I ran a can through recently. Honestly I can't say whether it helped because frankly my engine was purring like a kitten before I put it in (60k on the odo, bought at 37k; no idea of prior service history).

Won't just putting in Chevon gas with techron work the same way as the standalone chevon techron cleaner?

Yes, but some of us don't have a Chevron gas station close to home A 12 oz. bottle is good for up to 12 gallons and a 20 oz. bottle is good for up to 20 gallons. The Chevron w/ Techron gas probably has 1 oz. of the cleaner in each gallon

I've had wonderful results with BG44K in some pretty bad running cars over the years. It's expensive, but it's worth every bit of it's high price.

I doubt it. Just drive it for 3000 miles like the label says and let your system clean out

The detergents/cleaners can weaken seals. They (the cleaner companies) suggest running a bottle before each oil change. I run one every 30k.

I used some Redline Injector Cleaner a few weeks agao and I think it might have caused my multiple cylinder misfires, I think the injectors got clogged. I had my max for only about a month and I dont think any type of injector cleaner was ever used...it has 81k miles on it. I called up Colonial Nissan, near philly, and they said the BG 44k Fuel System Cleaner is $57 Anyone know where I can get it under $20?

For clarification, Chevron makes two products, Techron Valve Cleaner and ProGard fuel injector cleaner withTechron. The bottles look almost identical. I've found them both at Pepboys.

I used Chevron Supreme 91 oct gas exclusively, and noticed a sig difference after adding the Progard.

Many people have much love for the BG44, but I haven't tried it. My local Texaco Quick Lube carries it.

PS, I have read all the important FAQs, etc. Sheesh.

Chevron Concentrate, not ProGuard, about every 5000 miles just before an oil change. During those in between 4500 miles, use Lucas Fuel injection cleaner and upper cylinder lubricant. Always try to run major brand gas. In the fall, use a dose or two of STP water remover to take care of any moisture in the tank before winter freeze. Dont get carried away, use additives sparingly, more is not always better..........
