What problems using regular power steering fluid instead of Dexron III?

What kind of things would you expect to see/hear/feel if you used standard power steering fluid. A friend wants to know. Honest.

I put it in mine and it worked fine during the summer, but during the winter the fluid started freezing up and I had to wait until the car warmed up the fluid before I could drive (no power steering). I don't know if it hurt my pump, but now I put in Dexron III ATF and everything is fine Regular ATF is not that expensive so buy that... http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/702
