1/2 qt is not too bad. You could just drain it out. But way too much is bad. If the oil gets flipped up by the crank, it gets air in the oil. That causes the oil pump to cavitate and your engine loses oil pressure.

Which car do you have? The 2002 takes 4.5 qts (with filter change). An extra 1/2 quart will not hurt anything.

The first time I read this...I thought you added an extra 5 qts...that would be bad.

I would just unscrew the filter and dump out the oil in it and then screw it back on. This will be about a cup or more, then recheck it. I`ve done this and it works.

I cant remove the filter at all even with the filter wrench and my super-strong cousin tightned the plug way out of specs. So i just left the oil in there, hopefully in a couple of days the oil gets burned a little. Ill be watching it carefully but the real question is how much damage will it do?

The real question is that filter and plug WILL have to come out someday, why not now?

LOL, that would be a trick and a half. Once you remove that drain plug try to screw it back in with over four litres trying to escape.

I have done it before and it is easy. I didn't say to take the plug ALL the way out and stick it in your pocket and watch all the oil run out!

oh so true. My friend's mechanic put an extra 1.5 qts into his 3000gt vr-4. We were wondering why the oil pressure gauge keeping going off for low oil pressure everytime the car was in idle or with the clutch in.

also, he just got a SES light for the MAF sensor (oil come back around into the intake tract and stained the sensor)

i've heard it's better to have a little less oil than too much oil. is this true?

A little less won`t hurt. I check mine in the morning prior to start-up, if it is a touch below the max line I just leave it. I don`t top up if it isn`t at least a half quart.

lever it off? isn't the filter meant to be screwed on?

Ok, I figured someone may not get my drift,(no problem, I didn`t explain it very well). Put the screwdriver into the filter at a 90 degree angle and then start to turn it counter-clockwise by gripping it with your hands and turning it. (lever effect).
