I want to get my tranny flushed at the dealer for my 30k service.
Im guessing thay a synthetic works best, but what brands are the best performance and protection wise?
Any input helps.

all are pretty much the same, just use what your owners manual says.

I'm using Mobil 1 and I like it. Much better shifting. Don't know if your dealer would have it available, though. They may only have Nissan ATF in stock. You may want to ask them beforehand. They most likely charge you more for the service because you're requesting synth fluid (Mobil 1 ATF is about $6/quart where I live).Originally Posted by NewLoveI30

I actually called the stealership and they told me that the best atf oil is nissan and its like 5 dollars a quart and that i would need to change the tranny filter aswell and thats 39 dollars just for the filter.
Is the filter neccessary and i have heard many org members promote Amsoil and Mobil 1 and now valvoline. Which one is best made for the car and should we just use nissan atf?

Just my opinion... My '02 is shifting much better with Mobil 1 than with the factory fill ATF. And as you have seen, other people running other brands of synth ATF (Redline, Amsoil) are claiming the same. Nissan's ATF is regular conventional Dexron/Mercon fluid. Any compatible synth fluid should match and most likely exceed Nissan's ATF quality.Originally Posted by R.I.P. Grandma

there is not a filter on any 5th auto. there is however a metal screen which i guess could be called a filter but replacing it is not necessary unless it is torn. at the same time, i doubt you could talk the dealer into cleaning the screen. i got a metal screen and the gasket from advance auto for around 12 bucks. you may want to consider taking it to a local garage and bring your choice of atf and ask them to just wipe down the screen. i use mobil 1 mainly because its available locally and 4 bucks a quart.Originally Posted by R.I.P. I just did a complete flush and conversion to Amsoil
and I am pleased with it. Plus 90,000 mile change
intervals (compared to 30,000 with dino ATF) isn't bad either. I have 23k miles and my fluid was brown
and the magnets in the pan were covered. By the way R.I.P ; there is no filter per se its a very fine metal screen but mine was clean, so to answer your question you probably do not need new screen.

You gotta to love that...

"This race-proven, fully synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) outperforms all conventional multipurpose ATFs. It provides an outstanding low-temperature fluidity and keeps the transmission clean. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF also provides excellent gear shifting and protection under severe driving conditions.
Applications: Provides performance superior to GM Dexron® III and Mercon® in all domestic and imported cars and most automatic truck transmissions."
You're better off buying Amsoil online (some .org members are Amsoil sellers). Mobil 1 you can get in places like Pep Boys, Murray's Auto Discount, Auto Zone, etc.

Yea i emailed one org member to see how much it would have been for 12 quarts of Amsoil ATF shipped to NYC, but he never replied so considering i want to do this by sunday i will probably go with Mobile1 ATF looks to cost around 6 per quart around my way.
I have to agree w/ the Mobil1 ATF camp. I went from my Matic D to Mobil 1 and felt very nice. My last ATF change I went back to Matic D and the tranny doesn't feel as smooth anymore.
I'm sure Redline or Amsoil synthetic would have similar results.

Just clean your tranny "filter" with spray-on brake cleaner or carb cleaner. It's a durable metal screen, not a filter that needs replacing like an air or oil filter needs periodic replacing.
I just flushed my auto tranny yesterday afternoon. I dropped the pan, cleaned it, and removed the line into the radiator to do a complete flush. I had whatever synthetic Jiffy Lube uses in there and I put all Mobil 1 synthetic and I can't tell a difference at all in shifting. I only drove it last night but as far as I can tell there is NO difference. I got the Mobil 1 at Autozone and it was 4.99/qt. I used 13 quarts total.
