Speaking of Oil, what brand do you guys run?

I just switched to penzoil full synthetic for my Max, but I have always run Shell Rotella T full synthetic in my '02 Yamaha WR426 dirt bike. I think my Max likes it way better.... I have been changing my own oil and was wondering what you guys have had good luck with and what prices.

Screw Penzoil. If you are going to go synthetic get mobil one, Amsoil, Redline, or what I AM using ROYAL PURPLE
Royal Purple is the best i have come across

I'll second that notion. Don't go by peoples opinions as everyone has their favorite brand. The fluid and lubricants section of the board have a wealth of info.

While Royal Purple does well in racing, it doesn't hold up very well at all for extrended drain intervals and tends to break down quickly. Both Amsoil, Redline and Mobil 1 (SuperSyn only) provide far superior characteristics compared to the rest. Check out the oil analysis spreadsheet in the fluids section and you will find that Amsoil tends to be the best, followed by Redline and Mobil 1. No oil will give you tremendous boosts in hp or mpg. Mobil 1 is easily available. Amsoil provides up to 1 year drain intervals, which saves you a ton of money.

Virus, do you have a favorite vendor that you use to get good deals on Amsoil or any oil for that matter?

I normally buy from iwannabmw here. www.mdvsynthetics.com. However, talkinghorse offers the same discounts and both of them are very highly regarded for their outstanding customerservice. I usually get mine within 2 days after ordering.

Just be sure to mention maxima.org to them and they will offer you huge discounts off retail.

I've used Amsoil for about 11 years now. When I had an apartment for a couple of years and wasn't allowed to change my oil in the parking lot, I went with Mobil 1 and did 5k oil changes.

Iam not a great fan of synthetics !!!!

I used to be a loyal Mobil 1 Drive clean user but I switched to Pennzoil dino sometime back and my Max loves it.

Looks like Pennzoil is better for stop and go traffic and my car is well behaved and acceleration better. I don't know if it has got to do with engine oil but I don't see myself going back to Mobil anytime!!! Pennzoil is great -- I would think their synthetics would be equally good too.

Oil analysis doesn't lie. The only dino oil worth using is Castrol GTX.

Using Amsoil 5W-30, bought from talkinghorse (great to do biz with). Plan on getting about 20,000 miles on the oil with a filter change at 10,000 miles.

I used conventional oil for the 1st 10,000 miles, I then switched to Mobil 1 and used that till 70,000 (week and a half ago). I am now using Amsoil (from talkinghorse, who was very helpful) and I honestly notice a difference. My car is running much smoother...almost effortless. I'm more than satisfied with this purchase!

mobil 1 supersyn with the bosch 3323 filter. the previous oil change i used the mobil 1 filter but dammit, 13$ for a filter?

so i reverted back to the bosch. it may have the tendency to get stuck but I don't mind using the channel locks (and i change the oil every 5k so it doesn't really matter).

Bosch makes good filters. You could buy the K&N filters. They are almost identical to the Mobil 1 and both are made by Champion labs. The K&N usually costs around $8.

I think that turbo95max and/or hakk97se are amsoil dealers and will give you a discount. They are both from NorCal. Check out the west coast section on this forum.

Thats a bit much. I change mine every 5k. I just did a change at 4200 (was going on a trip) and sent it in for analysis. With 30k on the clock, Blackstone lab said all looked well and I could probably increase the drain interval to 6k.

Will try that on the next drain and lab test.

Do you have the analysis posted anywhere? I haven't seen anyone actually post one on Synlube yet and would love to see it!

How did you get the org discount?

I checked the site and saw the 15208-9E000 filter is for 1995-2001. Will it also work for my 04? They have the inferior 1520865F00 listed for mine.

thanks

No I have not posted it, the analysis is a little different than most in that it contains data that is non conventional to other oil analysis, ie: there will be a higher number of solids which in fact is really the coloidal properties of the oil, whereas a conventional analysis would flag this, another example would be in area of Iron or fe, the type of antioxidants used in this lubricant has a higher fe count than normally expected, this as well would be flagged.

Additionally the thresholds that are set and adhered to in a conventional analysis, are much higher in synlube due in part that the chemistry of the oil it being radically different, therefore the numbers can be misinterpreted, one has to have a baseline of the virgin sample and work from this premise forward in order to calculate the data properly, and know intimately how this oils chemistry reacts with metals to know what is considered normal or abnormal.

Given this I'm a little apprehensive to post some of this data due that this may incite a unhealthy debate instead of a healthy one yet I'll give it some thought and see in the interim when I get some time, I'll try differentiate the data so as to make comparisons, I have not posted in quite some time have been too busy with work, yet I'll see what I can do.
