Synthetic oil = more horsepower

I was in a shop today getting my Budget Y-pipe installed. I got to talking to a couple of guys who were looking at a modded Accord with a V6 - Injen CAI and FSTB were noticeable, plus I'm sure it had exhaust work done to it. We got to talking about synthetic oil. I was told that the dynometer test on the Accord showed an increase of 6 hp at the wheels as a result of the synthetic oil. To me this seems like bafflegab. Does anyone know anything about this? I know there is less friction with the synthetic oil, which I haven't switched to yet, but does it possibly lead to increased power?

Another question. I recently had my oil changed at 84,000 km. I typically change it every 6,000 km (3,750 miles) as the manual suggests. If I switch at 90,000 km to synthetic, do I need to change the synthetic oil after 1,000 miles as I have seen someone suggest on this forum, and do I need to fllush the engine beforehand. I have never had an engine flush. 90,000 km is just coming up to 56,000 miles. The car has the original plugs in it and runs like new. Mostly highway miles as I have a commuter/drive to the store car.

if that car has mostly highway miles, aren't you kinda flushing money down the toilet by changing oil so quickly? you should be able to go double what you're doing now.

i've read from other threads that if you are planning on moving the synthetic, you should do a mix; put in 3qt synthetic and the rest non-synthetic. again, i didn't do this, so take it for what it's worth.

good luck

I thought it was time or distance with oil changes. The first two years I had the car I put on 28,300 km (17,600 miles). Since then, I have only been averaging about 7,500 km/year (4660 miles). So I change the oil every 6,000 km and a couple of times I have changed it at about 4,500 km as that's all I put on in about 9 months during those time frames. If I listened to the propaganda the luby-loos spin I would be changing the oil every 90 days come hell or high water which I think is BS. Also during the winter the car might only be driven say 1500 or 2000 miles in 4 or 5 months as I try not to drive it if the roads have been salted and I think its only seen snow once or twice. Some might call be ****-retentive!

So given my track record, I question the benefit of switching to synthetic because wouldn't time be the overriding factor, not distance?

Synthetic reduces friction, which decreases engine and drivetrain loss.

OIl is designed to protect the engine, not to gain hp perse. Try to find some material specs on Royal Purple and see if you still think this is a good oil to use. Any oil can be designed to free up hp. But most don't do this because it's at the expense of engine protection.
