What ATF's to stay away from?

I read the sticky, but I didn't read which ones people had problems with down the road, or just in general are not recommended. Thanks for all responses.

I think you meant which brand to stay away from, right? Well... so far I only use Redline D4 and Mobil 1 ATF in my car. For regular ATF, stick with name brand like Pennzoil.

Valvoline Dexron III/ Mercon ATF

I flushed my tranny with Valvoline Dexron III(G)/Mercon ATF and it is a good OTC ATF. The shifts are smoother and its anti-shudder protection should be a plus compared to the other brands and definetly a cut obove OEM fluid. Well any OTC ATF like Pennzoil, Valvoline, Chevron, Castrol etc are of the same base with little changes --any one of the above are good.

I personally like Valvoline becoz they make good stuff!!!

Your joking right?
From most of what I've read, Valvoline is one of the worst at least for engine oil. Too many additives, etc. But if you've had good luck with them then more power to you.

It all depends on who one talks to -- you will see folks swear to not use Penzzoil engine oil but some say it is good stuff and have run them on their vehicles for 200K miles with no problems!! I can stand tall and alone and say Pennzoil products meet other brands of oils.

I personally take everything what people say about oils with a grain of salt -- it keeps objectivity from making decisions based on oil analysis. Also, in such a competitive market I doubt anyone can sell a product that has not been tested for its effectiveness. This is not third world / communist country where there is no way out but to buy what the govt. sells.

Also, I trust that stores that sell them OTC continue to sell them since they haven't had customers coming back complaining things went wrong. There is always that unlucky person and one should be pragmatic in life that it would not be YOU!!!

Actually, the only one I stay away from is Nissan ATF simply because of what I read about it in the Spreadsheet, and my desire to avoid doing any business with my local jerk Nissan dealer. I've used both Pennzoil and Mobil 1 ATF, each of which seem fine and neither of which I can tell any difference between when driving.
