A '97 Maxima is VQ30DE.

If you go to the K&N or Mobil 1 site, it'll guide you to the correct filter for your car. Googling may also help.

For the K&N it's the HP-1010.

A K&N can be ordered just about anywhere online. The Mobil 1 filters were a pain to find online. I gave up and bought the filter and the oil at the local AutoZone.

stick with nissan oem filters. Jerry Rome Nissan website with "Maxima" discount is cheaper than free shipping.
use the oil weight your manual/oil cap states. in Hawaii, I'm sure 10-30 will be fine. In PA I use 5W-30 year round. that's what it asks for and we have cold -10 deg winters and hot 100 deg summers.
