Do I need a washer for the ATF drain plug?

I just flushed and filled my ATF fluid last week and am now getting a small leak from the drain plug. I replaced the old drain plug with a new one when I did the flush and fill and did not think to check the old drain plug for a washer. So any isnight will be much appreciated.

BTW, is it an indication of anything that my drain plug is leaking small quantities of fluid? Should I be concerned? The only thing I can think of is that I overfilled it with too much ATF fluid. ok thanks

Yes, the ATF bolt on your '96 uses the same copper crush-washer as the engine oil drain plug. Torque-spec is 22-29 ft-lbs. It would not be leaking from the drain-plug if it were overfilled...my guess is that either the bolt is not tightened properly or the washer need replacing.

Sorry, I didn't read your post carefully. If you installed your new drain plug without a washer, that's most likely the source of your problem...as I said above, the ATF plug takes the same washer as the engine oil drain plug. ed

Is it messy to remove the bolt and then quickly try and put the washer or crush ring in and then putitng it back on?

Its about as messy as trying to do that to your oil drain plug.

probably. best bet would probably be to:
  1. Drain the fluid from the pan normally like you probably did the first time (I would drain into a VERY DRY, VERY CLEAN container if the fluid is expensive and you don't want to replace barely used fluid. If it was regular cheap fluid, play it safe and replace with new fresh fluid)
  2. put the washer in place
  3. refill

New washers screw on to the plug, and the old crushed washers can be a pain to get off, so there is no way you can swap them out quickly. Do it right...drain and refill.
