Check Costco for Mobil-1 oil. Their prices were a bit better than Wal-Mart last I checked.

prices are the same, you must buy more than one quart so ends up to be $4 per quart.

At 6k total miles, I put syn into my VQ35 for the first time. I ran that fill for 4k miles, sampled it for UOA, and changed it. As you can see from my UOA results, I could have run this oil a lot longer, even the first fill, which still contained a good bit of the last dino fill. I'm assuming I can run this oil for 10k miles in this engine without any problems, and I will verify this with further oil analysis. By the way, if you haven't tried a UOA yourself, I highly recommend it. Not only do you learn a lot about your engine and chosen oil, but it's just plain fun for car obsessed types (same types who join a forum like this...). In the final analysis, though, do whatever you feel comfortable with.

wats up guys,

i'm about to switch my car over to supersyn mobil 1, I just got the car so the previous oil change was done by the dealer with regular oil but I was think maybe it would be better to switch my oil to syn m1. My question is wat grade do you guys suggest I put, I drive a lot in the city stop and go and I drive her pretty hard. is 0w30 or 5w30 make any difference? PLUS I LIVE IN NYC, its cold here rite now so any suggestions would be very helpfull... THANKS IN ADVANCE.

If you're going to go with M1, either the 0w-30 or the 5w-30 would be great choices. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two in actual use, except perhaps the 0w would give you a slight starting edge on really, really cold mornings.

THANX,

i really appreciate the quick response. I'll probable go wit the 5w30 i dont think mornings are going to be that bad here. but I'll check to see if i can find anythin on the web to see if there is any big difference. Oh what filter would you guys suggest??

You can stick with 5w30 all year around.

Another related thought: there's a member over on BITOG (G35 owner) who seemed to have high wear metals when using the M1 30 wt products in his VQ. I've been using the 0w-30 German Castrol, which is a distinctly heavier syn 30 than the Mobil products. GC is a little over 12 cSt, whereas the M1s are around 10 cSt, so the GC is almost a 40 whereas the Mobils are nearly 20s. On my first UOA with the GC, I got outstanding results, especially considering that it was a first run of syn in a young VQ. Anyone else seem to get better results with the the slightly heavier oils? M1 is an outstanding product (which I used myself for many years), but I'm left with a lingering suspicion that the M1 30s might just be a tad thin for the VQ. Any comments on this?

EDIT: I forgot to add that I'm toying with trying M1 0w-40 to see how it does in my VQ. Anyone out there try this oil and do a UOA?

That's cool because you guys see more heat than we do in the Summer months. I just picked up my car from the body shop and it was -14 outside.

With non-synthetic oil it's better to use an oil with as small a difference in the viscosity range as possible. The best oil, from a viscosity breakdown consideration, is a single grade oil matched to the climate, and just go to higher or lower viscosity oil as the seasons change. I don't know if that is true with synthetics, though.

I change it at 3000-4000 miles because it's mostly city and I drive the car hard.

Definitely hand! The first time I used a filter wrench was when I first changed my oil. The second time I changed my oil took two hours and a trip to walmart to buy a long screwdriver (hammered it through the filter and used it like a handle to get enough torque to unscrew the filter. That's a mistake you make only once.

Just tighten it as hard as you can with your hand and the next time it will come off nicely, as long as you oiled the rubber ring on the filter before putting it on.

I always put on by hand and remove with an oil filter wrench. I've never had it stay loose enough to take off by hand. This doesn't bother me though. The only concern I have is overtightening. If it leaks then I know it isn't tight enough. That said I only do it once or twice a year so...

Haha.

I change my filter 6 times a year. And that's at my new, longer 5k-filter and 10k-oil intervals. It used to be a full oil change 9 - 10 times per year...
