ATF Flush tomorrow -- Mobil 1 ok?

Street Reeper has agreed to help me flush the tranny tomorrow (I am at about 51k miles now and doubt that it has ever been done). I was wanting to switch over to Mobil 1 ATF but read through some of the threads and wasn't getting the positive feeling about it that I hoped.....not to mention it is 30 dollars for 6qts (so about 50 for 10 that I will ened) at AutoZone.

First question...is the Mobil 1 worth it?

And second....anyone know of any place cheaper than AutoZone to buy it from?

Thanks

Mobil 1 and Amsoil are the best.

Ya, just read through about 10 more past threads and seem to be getting the good information I was hoping for......now, to find it cheaper somewhere.

Well, just decided to go ahead and buy 11 qts at Autozone for just under 60 dollars with tax. For some reason it was 8.99 a qrt at Pep Boys -- ridiculous.

Redline

Hey,

I used redline in my tranny. The best thing I could ever do and along with
a Hayden cooler. I learned alot from my first transmission. Redline is pricey
but I really notice the difference right away and I am not finished cycling
it through.

Ya, did the ATF flush about two weeks ago and have been really glad I spent the extra money on the Mobil 1. The tranny cooler will be coming sometime soon.

Definitely! The biggest difference was the shifting between first and second....much smoother. We (the OKC guys) went cruisin tonight and got to put the tranny to work pretty hard and it performed excellently. I highly reccommend switching to Mobil 1 or Amsoil ATF.

S00NR1,
did you tranny had any delay or slipping from 1-2 at times? you use 11 quarts for the flush right? i'm looking into picking them up at autozone for $5 a quart...

No real delay, just a real hard shift from 1-2. Now that shift is like butter. I forgot to mention that running synthetic ATF will also keep your tranny running at a cooler temperature, which is another plus. I ended up using almost 12 quarts since I was a little low on fluid before the flush and since we wanted to do a full, complete flush. $5 a quart is probably the best you will find for M1 ATF.

I actually got the flush-n-fill at Jiffy Lube for $80, I think they put Pennzoil Syn ATF in there. Ya, the shifts became smoother, especially 1->2.

Just wondering, maybe down the line after a year, can I just drain that Pennzoil stuff and add Mobil 1 or Amsoil or Redline without doing a flush ?!? Will it help ???

The flush and fill is SOO easy. It only takes about half an hour to do and all it requires is a second person to start the car while you are underneath measuring how much is draining out.

I am a little bit confused here, but that's not unusual.

Here is my question. Why does it take 11 quarts of fluid to drain and fill.
Does the flush require an extra step that I am missing? I only drained my
tranny and I used only 4-5 quarts. What other steps do I need to do to get
more fluid out to put more fresh fluid in.

Well, if you think about the process -- for each quart you drain, you add another. Thus, to get a complete flush to ensure that your ATF is completely changed over to the new synthetic, you need to repeat the process approximately 10-11 times. This guarantees that all the new ATF you have added in has flushed out the old nasty ATF.

You will see this as you complete the flush. The first few quarts you drain will be extremely nasty and dirty. Gradually, as you get to like number 5 or 6, you will see the new synthetic ATF mixing in. Finally, when you get to the last step, the atf drained should look almost completely red (or new).

Read the sticky thread before doing it... it details the step by step process and the dos/donts based on folks who have done it before...

I guess where I got confused is one thread mentioned you needed another person to crank the car while another person measures the fluid that comes out. If you are doing a drain and fill only 4-5 quarts should come out a one time, correct?

When doing the flush properly, you only drain 1 or 2 quarts at a time. This stuff comes out VERY fast -- so it is very helpful to have another person there to start and stop the car while you measure how much is coming out.

Jay, your better off doing it your way and not the method given in the sticky.

With the other method, they are adding fluid in 1 or 2 qt intervals, the fresh fluid added is just mixing with the dirty fluid in the tranny pan. A standard drain and fill is either equal or a bit better than the other method. Espeically if the drain and fill is repeated at another time.

This might be the case if you were in a hurry, but trust me, Bill knows his stuff, and after doing several of these myself, I have seen the differences between the slow method (1-2 qts) and the quick method (4-5 qts). By draining 1 or 2 quarts at a time and refilling one or two quarts, you are allowing the syn ATF to go through the system and completely flush out all the old ATF off the inner transmission walls. By completing this process slowly with patience, you will see great results, and your tranny will be much cleaner thanks to it.

Are you sure Jiffy Lube use Syn ATF? for $80? That's the price I paid ~4 years ago, and the guy told me it is synthetic-blend, not full synthetic. My car was much smoother right after the flush (it was at ~40k). What I did was a drain-and-refill of Redline D4 ATF at my next oil change.
