My next oil change (Question)

4 Quarts Mobil-1 synthetic (not sure of 5W or 10W yet)
1 Quart Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer

My last oil change I used Castrol Syntec 10W and was wondering if I should continue on using a 10W oil or use a 5W oil...with 120K miles on the car I used 10W oil for the first time and had no problems.

Go with the 5w or 0w Mobil 1 since you are in New England and its winter time. Since you are using Mobil 1, the Lucas treatment is not necessary. If you insist on putting an over the counter "treatment" in the crankcase, go with the Valvoline Synpower oil treatment at 1 oz per quart or no more than 5 oz. It has soluble moly which is a good anti wear agent.

DO NOT put Lucas in with the Mobil 1. There is a post lying around here somewhere that has a link to a BITOG post with a detailed look at how Lucas OS actually decreases the syn's effectiveness......with pics to back it up. I will look around to see if I can find it.

Thanx for the advice...I guess I should be asking, what's a good combination of oil and an anti-wear additive to use for my next oil change? How about a quart of the Lucas and four quarts of Castrol GTX high mileage? Or what's something good to go with Mobil-1 synthetic?

The only thing I might consider as an additive to the Mobil 1 would be Lube Control. It can be found here

Why do you insist on using an additive? Mobil 1 will be fine with a good filter.

Chuck,

If you are insistent about additives, check out the Schaeffer product which their #132 Moly EP additive and lube control that Soonr1 mentioned. Unfortunately, you will have to order both of these products. A brew of these two products would be 5-6 oz of #132 and 2 oz LC at the oil change and 2 oz of LC every 1,500 miles.

Honestly, unless you have a specific problem you are trying to address with an additive, I wouldn't use one in your oil. Oil companies spend $millions on R&D to get their additive packages in correct proportions. A quality oil (like Mobil 1 for synthetics, Castrol GTX for dino) changed regularly will do you fine. A lot of the additive companies have been successfully sued by the FTC for fraudulent claims. There may be some decent additives out there, but like I said, unless there's a specific problem you're addressing, I wouldn't mess with the oil company's formulation. Run the right grade for your temps and change based on miles or time, whichever comes first (3000 miles/3 months for dino). And you can get an oil analysis to check your engine's wear metals and make an even more informed decision from there.

Additives are not necessary. Regular oil/filter change should be just fine w/ any cars.

I noticed you are in MA...the temp is cold there and so I would definitely go with 5w.

Take a look at Mobil 1 0W-40 oil. Advance sells it. It works great in cold weather. Synthetics are made to be used alone. Save yourself the headache of finding an additive and just switch to a synthetic brand. I've done it on many cars and had no problems.

I agree with everyone, no additive should be necessary. If you want to keep wear particles down, spend the extra money on a mobil 1 oil filter, since it traps particles down to 10 microns.

Absolutely no additives to synthetic oil. Amsoil in particular will void your warranty that they give if they find that you have used any additives. Lucas and the other put on a good show. I'm not saying Lucas products are bad. They just aren't necessary.
