what causes drain plug to leak?

All of a sudden my drain plug is leaking a bit, the washer looks in good condition and i have dino oil in there.

You need a new copper drain plug washer. Or it's loose

the one i have on there is silver, so thats the wrong one?

I have not used the washer a few times and it doesn't leak.

Check the threads on the drain bolt. My other car has this problem. Replaced the bolt and leak is gone.

The crush ring washer should fit very snug over the threads of the bolt.

Make sure you have it torqued properly too.

Yeah, this is more critical than you might expect. Years ago, I accidentally over-torqued the drain plug in the Civic I owned at the time, and broke the threads in the pan, not the bolt. That definitely causes leaks and is a huge PITA to remedy.

Pepboys carries a line of drain plug washers in silicon and gasket material. Worked for my wife's leaking 93 Sable.
