New Mobil1 EP on shelves at local AutoZone...

...for $5.99 a quart. I guess they are really proud of the stuff. However, considering this oil is guaranteed to last 15k miles, it's most likely going to end up being cheaper per mile than the 4.99 a quart regular M1.

You can get it at walmart for, IIRC, about $5.40.

I'd read the fine print as I don't think any oil that's going into say a hi miler, abused engine is going to last 15k. So although you might be able to use the oil for that long, I'd SERIOUSLY invest in some oil analysis before/during/after to monitor the oil's condition. It will greatly increase your cost per mile but you will know what's going on vs blindly accepting an oil's claim.

Yeah, I would never plan on taking it 15k miles, but it clearly states in the wording on the bottle that it is guaranteed to protect your engine for 15k miles, no exceptions.

EDIT: someday I will learn what "IIRC" means, lol.

It'll be interesting to see how the new formula tests out. But I would wait and let others test the mileage claims for you.

It's amazing that Exxon-Mobil continues imitate and validate technology and industry-leading concepts (such as synthetic oil, premium filters, and now extended drains) that AMSOIL (a small privately-owned corporation) pioneered over 30 years ago...the price of M-1 EP will probably be higher than the regular product as Mobil will have to use higher quality/more robust additive packages to achieve the extended performance.

I think I will just stick with regular M-1.

Here's the curious thing about the whole new "two Mobil 1s" thing. The standard M1 is now SM rated (the new standard), whereas the M1EP line is "only" SL rated. Many people believe that the SM standard is actually worse in general from a protection point of view than the SL standard. In particular, the SM oils are mandated to have significantly less zinc and phosphorous, on the theory that these compounds can, over time, poison your cats. Anyway, no "Chicken Little" predictions of doom, but I'd watch the performance of "regular" M1 since there's solid evidence that it's actually a somewhat "watered down" (oiled down?) product compared to its SL predecessor we all know and love. BTW, this is not just a problem with M1, all new SM oils face the same limits.

Yeah, I won't be jumping to throw this in my car. I will get the better filter when that becomes available.

The SM standard reminds of this stupidass push to 5W/20 motor oils, which current engines are not designed for. Doing all this under the guise of "better fuel econonmy" is a marginal at best reason, while the chances of insufficient lubrication and thus shorter overall engine life increases.

Most likely, Mobil 1 SM formulation will go off my recommended list until I see several analysis reports.

It will be interesting to see how Amsoil handles the reduction in ZDDP mandated by the SM standard, which is Amsoil's "bread and butter" additive that makes it an effective oil in the first place.

Does this make the new EP oil your current M1 recommendation?

Who knows for sure......I would rather see some initial analyses first. But I would recommend the EP formulation over the new SM formula Mobil 1 initially, I just wouldn't recommend being the guinea pig on doing 1 year intervals until others have tried it.

From a marketing perspective, I think the SM formulation concerned Mobil 1 enough to "split" into these two formulas as there is a lot of emphasis in the internet community on making sure oil companies are producing quality products.
