Best type of oil

I just wanted to see what everyone here is using. I personally like Quaker State Higher Mileage. I used it in my 200SX which was running strong at 225,000 miles when I got rid of it. I like to think the oil (with the addition of Marvel's Mystery oil at every change) helped keep it around that long!

The only DINO oil I'd ever use is GTX, there are many tests that prove it's the best. Synthetic, I use mobil 1 5w30.

go to bobistheoilguy.com and read up. Short answer - Mobil 1 synthetic. No additives are needed for synthetic oil. Fuel injector cleaner once in a while doesn't hurt.

I concur that bobistheoilguy.com is a great place to start. There's more info there than you'll ever be able to digest. Look hard at the BITOG Used Oil Analysis section, you'll see a great deal of objective evidence of how particular oils do in different engines. Run a search on "VQ" and build from there.

The Mobil-1 products are fine oils. I have, however, begun to believe that the VQ likes its oil a tad thicker than the 30 wt Mobil oils. All of them are very thin 30s, averaging around 10 cSt thickness when hot. This puts them just above the threshold for being "thick" 20 wts. Many people have fine results, but you'll see a few marginal VQ results using the M1 30 wt oils. I'm using the German version of Syntec ("German Castrol" as it's been named on the net, it's a 0w-30 product). I've had two outstanding UOAs with it so far. It is a 12.5 cSt oil, making it very nearly a 40 wt oil at op temp. Do some homework, and then try some experiments with used oil analysis (roughly $25 per test, although some labs are even less). This will give you a good basis for deciding what's right for your car in your climate, driven by you.

You can't argue with your results but most, if not all, oil manufacturers recommend against using additives. Oils are complicated blends of basestocks and additives and by blindly using an additive, you are essentially upsetting the formula/performance characteristics the engineers designed into the oil. But then again, you can't argue with 225K of reliable service...

I've used AMSOIL 0w-30 for the past several years and have had excellent results/UOA's with it. Very smooth/quiet engine operation, good fuel economy, zero oil consumption between semi-annual changes.

I've already responded to the question, but I forgot to add one thing. I do enjoy reviewing the diverse responses that questions like this generate, but asking a "which oil is best" question is a lot like walking into a Baskin-Robbins store and starting an argument about which ice cream flavor is best. There's a lot of good stuff in there, and probably a few undisputed duds too, but if you're looking for a consensus like "chocolate is best," forget it. Likewise, many of us have had great results with one oil or another, and are convinced in our hearts that our choice is "best." And any fool who doesn't see things just like I do should probably be driving a Yugo or something like that. . .

You are correct, I should've titled it, which oil do you prefer!

I've used Amsoil in the cars for the better part of 13 or so years. I'm currently running Mobil 1 in the Nissan Titan, but it requires 7.5 quarts of oil each change, so I'll be switching to Amsoil 0w-30 and doing extensive oil analisys until I can determine the drain intervals.

This test is based on a 10w-30 lube, but interesting (and will probably generate debate) just the same ;-)

www.lincolnsonline.com/article105.html

this is my main reason for mobil1, i run this in all my cars now except the catera and the allante wont get it until it comes out in the summer.

the guy who writes the article is a little over the top with his reccomendations for break in changes but i think he knows what hes talking about.

People on BITOG have also convinced me to use M1

I also dont like the idea of haveing to order my oil, i like driving to the store to get it.

but its your decision
