For you that use 93+ octane fuel...
I was prompted to start this thread because of the rising fuel prices. Until recently, I didn't pay much mind to the cost of a fill up. It was somewhere in the high $20's, low $30's range to fill up Monty Max. Today, it took almost $40 to give him the good, high octane fuel he deserves. Any of you considering sacrificing performace for the extra greenbacks in your wallet?

Ive seen a recent spike...2 weeks ago I paid $2.16 for 93...now IM lookin at $2.29 at the least..$2.45 in some places in Buffalo. Im riding it out, 93 always, its recomended to pick a fuel, and stick with it. So if it goes up 20 cents..Its only $4 more to fill the tank anyway...I mean, 87 here is 2.15 now...Ill pay the 5-6 dollar premium..(I pay so much in insurance, this is a drop in the bucket, i mean gastank, anyway)

the gas prices are outrageous! everytime i go fill her up, i think about downgrading to a mid gas, but i just can't seem to. instead of filling her up all the way, i just put about 3/4 tank and drive less.

O.K., Jayzmax, here's your chance to be of real service. Do a few 0-60 runs with the best gas, then shift to 87 octane for a couple of tankfuls and rerun 0-60 times. Let us know what you discover...

Be glad you aren't buying gas in Europe. Last time I was there, 4 years ago, it was over $5 per gallon. High test at $2.30 is okay by me. But if you can't pay the freight try filling the tank with premium, then when it hits the half full, top it off with lower grade. Run her down to 1/4 full, then fill her up with premium. When you hit 1/2 tank, top off with lower grade, and so on.

Ok, you do have me wondering....how much difference is there? I know for a fact that when you have run nothing but Super since the beginning, if you put anything less in it, you will feel the difference. Iven been broke and done it to my 97 SE.
I guess im wondering, will that difference balance out? Surely a expert in this matter will step up from here.....

I just can't see myself switching to a lower grade. It may hurt a little to pay the higher prices but I'm lucky in that it's only about 2.16 where I fill up. Once I think about how much folks in the larger cities and up north pay, I don't have much to complain about.
I think I've almost developed blinders because I can't even tell you what the lower grades of gas cost. I just don't pay it any attention.

Lightonthehill has said it takes a few tankfuls for the car to adjust to a change of gas grade. Maybe if you've been running hi octane and then swtich to 87, performance does suffer noticeably for the first 87 tankful. But, the performance comparison should be made after several tanks of lower grade fuel...actually, it would be interesting to compare immediately after switching to 87, then at 100 mile intervals thereafter until 2-3 tankfuls had been consumed.

I don't wait till the tank is empty completly. I usually fill when its at the last 3/4.. it takes bout 31.00 exactly at 2.19-2.20 in price...

Later on I just don't want to fill like I cheated on her putting that cheaper gas inside her. I only want the best and nothing less.
I've been spoiling her this long and I just can't stop now since gas has gone up, what .30 - .35/gallon since the avg.
It just means less joyriding: no more telling my wife, "what you need I'll go get" or having two gallons of whole milk in the fridge and saying "baby I'm going to the store to get some skim milk."
Now if gas goes up to $4, that's another issue.

$2.39/gl 93 Octane for my Max, I always put 93 Octane in my baby, even though refueling has become a tad pricey. The Max feels as if she has more power. I just figure...treat the Max right, and she will put out with minimal problems if any years down the road. I learned that concept the hard way w/my last ride, and i think i put more cash into repairs than i did the loan.
I remember paying a dollar and some cents for gas in North Carolina, then traveled to NY and had to refuel at nearly three times what i paid in NC. And that was two years ago. I would hate to refuel in NY right now.

yeah i dont let it reach 1/4 of a tank usually. so fill up is not really a problem. i need to drive my car and never considered changing octanes. ive only put 93 in her since i got her. from 42 miles to 5300 i got on her now and she wil only see 93.

FYI... I notice a HUGE difference between "premium" gas in Oklahoma and Texas. The stuff in OK is CRAP, must have to do with additives/formulas, because I can actually feel a performance difference. Whenever I go up there, I make SURE the tank is full before I cross the red river.
I'm sure the gas in say Cali has got to suck

According to my Nissan Mechanic, you loose about 15 to 20 HP with the 87 (from a Nissan instructor) and it would take a few tanks for the computer to adjust. Here in Canada when the refineries change into/outof the winter gas recipe in fall/spring we also go through this computer adjustment for a couple of tanks. Premium all the way...for now (we will see how much they jack the prices for the summer driving/vacation season).

Woops... Nismo, I had to ask. Came across it on TV late last night when some stations turn into BS sales and still could not beleive that crap is STILL being marketed. Was curious if anyone on the forum ever bothered with it. I honestly gave it thought when i first saw it two years ago.

I moved to 87. I havent checked the MPG, but no pinging or other noticeable effects since, even at the first tank. I havent really driven it hard since 87 to see if performance change is noticeable. I doubt it would be much if it was anyways. About the most I could see is maybe slightly less MPG if anything at all changed.
