Nissan Oil Filter or Nippon?

Intertesting discussion going on in the 4thGen forum about whether these two filters are the same. Nippon or Nisan OEM? Figure over here someone might be able to clear this up. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=414143

I always put Nippon in my Maxima. So far no problems. It seems to be a very well built filter ...and it cost me $4.50

This weekend I changed my oil for the first time and the dealer had given me the 9e000 filter when I asked for a 2005 Maxima SE filter. Well when I did the oil change and pulled the old filter I noticed it was a different size and model number than what the dealer had given me. It was a 65f000 and I was mad because it was sunday, I had already taken the old filter out and the parts department of course is closed till monday. I did a bit of research here and on the net trying to see if the filter they gave me would at least work til I could get the proper 65f000. Well to my surprise it appeared that this 9e000 filter is sometimes prefered by some over the 65f000. Although it seemed to be a back and forth subject where some say the 9e000 is a better filter and others say it is too long for the clearance on the 2005 and could cause a problem with the wheel hitting it on hard turns. There was even a post from another talking about the pressure as the smaller filter holds less and can pressurize more quickly. Well as you can tell I was still confused as to whether or not I should try it. Eventually having no other choice on sunday I broke down and installed the filter and while it cetainly is a very close fit and actually pushes out the spplash shield a bit, it did not appear the wheel could hit it although the steering linkage was super close to it. I drove the car this morning and did not see any problems at all. However I would truly love to know if using this incorrect filter on the 2005 3.5 when it was designed for the 3.0 is going to cause any issues? Does anyone know the true answer to that? I am not expecting to hear a solution to if the construction is better or preferences over the other but just simply if it will cause any oil pressure problems or dangers of getting hit by the inner wheel turning or steering linkages?

Anyhow any input is appreciated.

It's now Monday, did you talk to the dealership, Atomic Ed? The last thing you want to do for warranty purposes is to install the wrong oil filter. By the way, you should be keeping all the receipts and keeping track of the mileage when any work you do yourself is performed. After all, you are on warranty.

all stealerships should sell u the 9e000 filter...just ask them for it....don't even say what car u have or else they might not sell it to u...it fits like a glove and will work just like the 65f00 filter....i'm using it right now...works great....i've seen the 65f00 and 9e000 filters side by side...and the 9e000 looks much better in terms of quality

why do the dealerships always choose to screw me? i swear, i've been on a 65F00 for all 43k of my miles so far, and that's the ONLY one they'll offer. looks like i gotta drive to RSM when i hit 45k....

Yes good point about the warranty and that is what I was worried about as well. We called the dealership and explained it to them and they told us it is an approved alternate for the 2005 Maxima as the 65f000 has been on back order for months now. Just seems to me a strange thing that something as important as the proper filter is not more controlled by Nissan as to what they hand out.

Quite some time ago, somebody (I think it was one of the moderators, Bill or Jeff) cut open both the 65F00 and 9E000 and were immediately convinced of the superior construction of the 9E000 filter.

i read about that too...but i really would've loved to see pics. i suppose it's simple enough to do on my own. i guess 45k will be the mark where my car is formally done with the 65F00

I found the pics comparing the 65F00 to the 9E000, they're actually in one of the stickys up above.
