Not ATF...GL4 gear fluid. And yes, use a synthetic such as Amsoil or Redline.

Sweet Jesus man...you put ATF into your MT? Yea, you definitely DO need to use the proper lubricant for something like your TRANSMISSION. Come on dude...use your head.

I use Redline and it's great. MUCH better on cold mornings...night and day difference.

Ever come out to your car on a REALLY cold morning and it feels like the transmission is filled with slush when you go to shift? With synthetic, that never happens.

Okay, but that's a 1991 Toyota Celica. The car in question though is a 1995 Nissan Maxima...slight difference.

duh! just saying for the record.....that ATF...sometimes makes its way into manual trans.....for some stupid reason.....

hell even toyota retracted that idea in 1992.

there is a prominent member of the board that used atf in his 6spd. lets see if he defends it or not.

My MGB recommends 20W50 in the gearbox and the rear diff... as well as the engine.

So it all depends on what it was designed for. But the MG's british so take that for what you will.

Phone the guy up who did the work and find out precisely what he put in the transaxle!
Just don't speculate on what it is. You may have to do nothing.

I had my transaxle fluid replaced in February with Quaker State GL4 75w90 gear oil. It is regular gear oil, not synthetic, and was amber/honey color. The OEM fluid that came out was black and probably should have been changed sooner.

If, in fact, you have to change the gear oil, stick with GL4 in a 75w90 or 80w90. Do NOT use GL5.

If you decide to switch to synthetic, do what someone above suggested and use, Redline or Amsoil. However, make sure it meets GL4 specs. Evidently GL5 will/may screw up any brass bushings in the transmission and harm the synchromesh.
