Power steering fluid replacement
Power steering fluid replacement
I decided to use the turkey baster method for removing and replacing power steering fluid from the reservoir.
I bought a litre (1,000 ml) of Dextron III ATF from Canadian Tire (house brand) and replaced about 185 ml.
Does anyone know how much volume the reservoir and system contains?
Over the course of the next week or so, should I repeat this process say five times until the entire litre has been used up, or is that overkill?

U da man, kcryan! Maybe, I'll try that. As you can see, I am rather **** about the Maxima.
Who knows, one day I might even buy new spark plugs, lol!

I had the power steering profesionally flushed in May 2004, but I didn't watch the process.
I took my car into a new Lubeworld the other day and got the guy to replace my fuel filter. He cleaned the throttle body at the same time and only charged me Cdn$35 all in (US$30).
In the interests of trying to sell me something, he stuck his finger in my power steering reservoir and told me I needed to change my PS fluid to which I replied I just did it last year and he responded that it should be changed every year. Suffice it to say, I did not rise to the bait.
Today, I sucked some PS fluid out with a baster and put it in a measuring cup. I poured an equal volume of new Dextron III into another measuring cup. There was a noticeable difference in color with the older fluid being darker. I dumped the new ATF fluid (about 6 ounces or so) into the reservoir.
I intend to continue this approach for awhile and am merely asking how much more of the ATF I should add.
The PS fluid had never been replaced prior to June 2004 and the stealership did not comment on it when I had the car there in May 2004. At the time of changing the PS fluid, more than 10.5 years had elapsed since I bought the car new, but it only had about 52K on it.
I now plan on replacing the PS fluid periodically as its easy to do.

I pulled the low pressure return line off the reservoir, put it in a bucket, plugged the fitting the line came off, filled reservoir with Mobil 1 ATF, put the wife in the driver seat to start the car and turn the wheel back and forth lock to lock while I poured more ATF in the reservoir. Had to have her stop the car once so I could keep up.
