1. GL-4 85w-90 2. GL-5 and EPA???

I've been looking for GL-4 for about a day, knowing we're recommended to use 75w-90. Went to NAPA and they had GL-4 85W-90. Would it be a problem to run this in the transmission, or should I keep looking for the correct weight?

Also, as I've been looking, I've been told that GL-5 is "new and improved" GL-4. Old threads have given the impression that while GL-4/5 spec gear oils are OK, there is no definitive proof that there will be no ill effects of using the 4/5 oil. I was told this morning that as of January GL-5 is the new EPA standard for engine oils, so I should use that. Granted, part of this is trite, but my questions are:
-does this apply only to engine oils (what the guy said), or does it apply to tranny lube as well?
-Is there GL-4 engine oil?
-Does this mean that we'll have to switch to GL4/5 ok lubes, as the EPA (if his statement is true) would be phasing out GL-4 with that action.

Thanks. Please let me know your opinions about the weight issue.

From: Chicagoland
EPA = Environmental Protection Agency
API = American Petroleum Institute

API GL-4 is not going anywhere.

Thanks for the reply, but that's what the guy said. What about the weight issue?

How cold will you really experience? 85W will be notchy when cold and until the transmission warms up. Nissan now recommends 75W85.

Let me guess, Sta-Lube 85W90 dino is what NAPA had in GL-4, ~$5/qt. For a $3 more contact TAlkinghorse and get Amsoil MTG 75W90.

precisely.....the napa stuff, and it works to ~$4/quart.

For temps...in the winter it'll touch low 30's at night...charlotte i think a little lower. Too low for the napa stuff?

As much as I don't want to wait (when something's on my mind, I have to get it done), it's now looking like I might have to.

I know for my 3rd gen trannys (just the 5 speed's any way) you HAVE to have GL-4. GL-5 has much harsher detergants and when stuck in a specifly GL-4 only transmission it will eat the syncros.

Then again from what Ive read mine (3rd genners) syncros are part brass. hopefully nissan told borg waner to spec some thing with some durability to it for your trannys. Id do a little more research on whether you need GL-4 or can use 4 or 5.
