Why does it suck? Because of the card board end caps on the newest batch?

VQ35 uses a 65F00.

Huh? they degraded the 9E000 filter too??? 65f000 is the cardboard caper, not the 9E000.

Apparently so, there was a thread about it in the Fluids and Lubricants forum some time back. I don't think its universal just yet though, since some places might still have the metal end capped ones.

In the Great White North Nissan specs the 65F00, and yes the 9E000 can be interchanged. But since so many people know better than Nissan-use what you will.

hey n00b, hows it going?

65f00 uses cardboard encaps, that have been known to fail. 9e000, which most of us were previously using, have recently gone to cardboard also. which sucks because i just used the last of my stock, which were metal.

M1-108 or 105 are nice, but not for $12/ea.

ill try the local dealer and see if i can still grab some metal ones.

The 65F00 is spec for the VQ35 down here too, but as explained previously, people have used the 9E000 (with no issues) because of its superior construction. It seems as if you are taking offense to this, although I'm not sure why.

autobarn is having a special buy a 4-quart jug of mobil1 oil and get the filter, all for $25. pretty much gives you the filter for roughly $4-$5. this was at the store, not sure about online.

Just cut a 65F00 and a 9E000 open, and the 9E000 is still a metal end cap. Yes it is superior to the 65F00 in constrution. If Nissan is willing to stand behind a 65F00 for warreny it cannot be all that bad. Yes, my perferance would be the 9E000.

You might look at a Wix, there top line filters use metal end caps.

Well in a sense that is like saying Nissan stands behind us using crap dino 5W-30 oil, because it does the job. But for those of us who care, we use synthetic like Mobil 1 or Amsoil for even more protection.

im sorry, i didnt hear you correctly

i just cut a delco filter open and theyre using metal endcaps, and ive NEVER seen a problem with a delco filter, and in comparos they seem to have good praise.

ill post up the filter number and give it a try at next OCI.

EDIT:

okay, VQ35 filters are PF1237 and VQ30s are PF2057

list on then is $4.75/ea.

anyone want me to cut one open?

Is there any way to know without cutting them open whether the 9E000 filters that I have sitting in my garage have cardboard or metal end caps?

Filter I opened must be from the old batch cuz it was metal-guess Nissan going to screw everyone, same price-less filter. Only a matter of time before we get the new stock.

if ur motor blows up it must be cardboard

you had to see the discontinuation of the old filter or even the end caqp eventually. i stocked up on the 65F00 regardless of cardboard.

no, but if your cardboard blows up, it might mean your motor.

don't go with m108..that is waaaay too small...especially if you're paying $12 for a synthetic oil filter! if i had my choice, I'd go m105 for sure...that thing is HUUUGE...and im sure it does a great job trapping all that junk....i'd prob run a good quality synthetic and slap on an m105...and call it a day until next year...

btw,

m108 = 65F00
m110 = 9e000
m105 = freakin humongo! its nearly TWICE the size of a 9e000...but still fits Vq35s no problem

Advanced Auto Parts is selling Mobil 1 Filters for $7.88 each (the ad says save $2 each). That price is good enough for me to go stock up on M1-105 filters -- I hope they don't exclude those specific filters from this sale -- will post again if they do. Their flyer here says this sale is on until Sept. 2, 2006.

The M105 has a higher bypass PSI calibration than the others. I wouldn't use it.

So, the 9E000 filters are cardboard now? Bah! Time to switch.

i just disected a used cardboard 9E. ya know, they are not as flimsy as the photos above make them look. they are qutie rigid and durable. you cannot separate the filter pleats from the endcaps without a significant amount of tearing force. is it as strong as the old ones? no, but does it really need to be? flow vs. filtration, ADV, and BPV operation are more important than endcap construction. and I think the new design has a larger effective filter area (with the elimination of the thick endcaps). in my opinion, there's no reason to believe the new design will not perform equally as well as the old under normal operation.

engine oil analysis > presumed oil filter capabilities

My current 9E000 batch still has metal end caps. The last one that my analysis was done on had cardboard end cap, no problems whatsoever at 6k drain intervals

I dont think its a "filterablity" (even a word?) but rather durability issue. I would never use a cardboard endcapped filter knowingly in my car. There is a thread floating in cyber space (of course to reference it i cant find it) that shows a colapsed Fram filter endcap that ended up hosing a motor.

Like anything, I am sure there are different levels of quality.
