I am thinking of using Amsoil XL 5w30 Synthetic motor oil in a VQ30DEK motor. How good is this stuff? How does it compare to Amsoil Series 2000 or Mobil 1? I can get it for 1/2 the price of Series 2000.

Amsoil is good oil, i like Mobil one more, and GC the most, but any of them will serve you quite well, honestly it comes down to what your paying, go with the cheapest, and easiest to get

 

The XL Series is Amsoil's budget line. Compared to Mobil 1, XL 5w-30 will protect better but you'll have to change it much more frequently. Compared to Amsoil's regular oils, it should protect just as well but, again, it won't last as long. Compared to Amsoil's Series 2000 oils, it's a total joke: protection and service life are almost night-and-day between the two.

I actually ran Mobil 1, then Mobil 1 Extended Performance, then Amsoil 10w-30, then Amsoil XL 5w-30, and then Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 when I still had my VQ30DE. The Mobil 1 and Amsoil XL oils were very good, the regular Amsoil 10w-30 was much better, and the Series 2000 kicked the crap out of all of them. I'm now using the Series 2000 in my DEK, and I still wouldn't trade it for anything. Even with a solid crank pulley and a full set of polyurethane motor mounts and subframe bushings, engine vibration is absolutely minimal. I almost feel like the other oils were a waste of time.

My brother went through a similar progression with his '96 Integra: Castrol Syntec first, then Amsoil 10w30, and now he's on Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30. His impressions were the same as mine: The mainstream oil was good, the Amsoil was much better, and the Series 2000 was the best by a freakin' mile.

Amsoil's budget line is still better than any Mobil 1.

Run the 1st & best....AMSOIL since 1972!

 

I am running Amsoil XL currently and I do not seem to be having an issue with it.

 

5w-20 XL is what I run in my car...
